Sonoma Valley

Northern California Wine Country

"Wine brings to light the hidden secrets of the soul, gives being to our hopes, bids the coward flight, drives dull care away, and teaches new means for the accomplishment of our wishes."

--- Horace

Sonoma Valley is situated comfortably between the Mayacamas Mountains and the Sonoma Mountain Range. Neighbor to the equally famous Napa Valley it is also referred to as the Valley of the Moon and is home to hundreds of wonderful wineries.

The valley is split into regions that characterize the wine varietals due to the weather and soils.Carneros, the Southern Region of the Valley is cooler in temperature as it receives the fog from the nearby coastline. It produces wonderful grapes for the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot varietals. Alexander Valley, located in the Northern Region gets far less fog, is warmer in temperature producing a greater variety of grapes; Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Zinfandel thrive. Sonoma Valley wineries are smaller and boutique like, often run by families rather than corporations.

Gloria Ferrer Winery

Caves and Vineyard

This Villa is inspired by the family's Spanish heritage and a haven for lovers of sparkling wine, such as myself. With breath taking views that seem to stretch on forever from their vista terrace and an atmosphere of Sonoma and Spain blended seamlessly you could sit for hours sipping on their sparkling wine and nibbling on the Spanish inspired offerings.

They produce their own olive oil which is available only on site along with other local delicacies. Their sparkling wines to taste are Brut, Blanc de Noirs, Va de Vi and Blanc de Blanc. I really enjoyed the sampling of these with their fruit and cheese platter, heavenly! They also have a wonderful line of Cuvee Sparkling wines to tickling your tongue with. They are open daily from 10:00am-5:00pm however they stop pouring tastes at 4:45pm. They also have daily guided wine tours every day at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm. For those who desire a private or group tour it is required to call ahead for a reservation.

Matanzas Creek Winery

Estate and Lavender Gardens

Matanzas Creek Winery is romantic in a country charm sort of way. With wafts of their amazing lavender fields filling your nose as you walk along the rustic feel of their grounds. A beautiful place to stop for a stroll, play a game of bocci ball and to find wonderful products made from their lavender. The lavender fields were amazing and attract butterflies giving it a magical feel.

They have wines to taste in the varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. They have been delighting wine lovers since 1978 and claim "...it takes but a single sip to understand why". My favorite was their Cabernet Sauvignon. Enjoy wine tasting daily from 10:00am-4:30pm, call ahead for private tours and tastings.

Ferrari-Carano Winery

Vineyards and Winery

Ferrari-Carano Winery is like taking a trip to Italy, the estate is fashioned into the beauty of an Italian Villa filled with amazing architecture and gardens that boast over 1000 tulips in spring. The gardens and villa inspire times of kings and queens who would stroll with their parasols and fans.

Located in the Alexander Valley they have a wide range of both red and white varietals to taste. I really enjoyed their Zinfandel and Fume Blanc. For those who love red wine they have Cabernet Sauvignon, Siena, Zinfandel, and Merlot. Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Fume Blanc, Viognier, and Bella Luce are their white wine varietals. Their wine tasting room and Villa Fiore is open daily from 10:00am-5:00pm. For a private tasting and tour call ahead for a reservation.

Red or White?

"A bottle of wine begs to be shared; I have never met a miserly wine lover."

--- Clifton Fadiman

For the most part those of us who enjoy drinking wine like many types of varietals; however, we usually tend to lean more to either red or white. Which one do you prefer?

The Best Way to Get Around

"Drinking good wine with good food in good company is one of life's most civilized pleasures."

--- Michael Broadbent

It goes without saying that wine tasting and driving are not a wise mix; obviously it is dangerous and illegal to drink and drive but it can also be stressful. Why worry about navigating the back roads, the twists and turns, or even finding entrances to the wineries? The day is truly far more enjoyable when taking Sonoma wine tours by limousine.

It is luxurious, elegant, relaxing and it is like having a personal wine tour guide. A fantastic company to use that will personalize your trip: Mr Zins Wine Tours. They will take care of all the logistics; making reservations for your private tours and tasting, take you to hidden gems, romantic spots to picnic, fabulous destinations and restaurants. They are experts of the wine country and can suggest some of the best wineries, inform you of special events or offerings happening around the valley and overall make your day in the vineyards far more relaxing and of course romantic. Sip on champagne, or the bottle of wine you just feel in love with as you take a smooth ride to your next destination.
