Sony Ereader PRS-T1

Ranked #4,323 in Computers & Electronics, #78,160 overall

My E-Ink Reader Is The Sony PRS-T1

I have recently purchased my very first e-ink reader the Sony PRS-T1. Not that I am new to ebook reading, far from it, but before now all my devices were lcd readers. I started off years ago with a Dell Axim x51v and never looked back!

The reason for my now wanting to try e-ink was mainly for the battery life. I love the idea of going weeks without having to recharge.

But out of all the e-ink readers around why Sony? Check out my Features of E-ink Readers to follow my frustrations with finding a decent reader, it wasn't as easy as it should be. But I'm really enjoying this reader now, especially since I have covered the shiny black plastic border with a skin.

This is definitely my favorite product right now!

Take All Your Books With You Whereever You Go

Sony PRS-T1 CollectionsThis is my favorite thing about ebook readers and now in particular with the Sony reader. I tend to re-read and never know what I am going to want to have a re-read of next. I used to have piles and piles of books strewn everywhere and I remember madly searching for a book that I desperately want to read and can't find. (You always get more desperate for the read if you can't have it!)

Now I have all my books sorted in Collections, easy to find, no drama. Just select and read,

It still gives me a buzz.

Sony Reader PRS-T1 In The Spotlight

The Sony PRS-T1 is small, compact and light. Features that won me over were having buttons and a touch screen, that is one of the biggest bonuses. I love using both, I use buttons for page turns and getting to home screen but for everything else I use the touch screen.

While I would prefer folders for filing the Collections work nicely and are easy to manage.

The clear crisp text is great, it has the latest pearl e-ink display, with various font choices and sizes.

There is roughly 1.3gb internal storage that is user available, enough to hold up to 1,200 ebooks. It also has a micro sd slot for up to an additional 32gb of memory.

Sony PRS-T1 Home Screen

Sony PRS-T1 Home ScreenThe home screen on the Sony PRS-T1 is decent for a device this size. There are four short cuts to books, one of which is a continue reading thumbbnail. I like that the book covers show.

There is a battery and wifi indicator on the top status bar, my wifi is always turned off as I load books from my pc and don't have much use for it, but it's always nice to know it's there if needed.

You can also get to your collections, periodicals and settings from this screen, which is straight forward.

All up I really love this device that can pack a lot of books into it.

Tips For The Sony PRS-T1

Here are some tips for the Sony PRS-T1 I have picked up along the way.
  • The Sony PRS-T1 comes in three different colors: Black, (most common), White and Red. The border around the screen is extremely shiny and glares. This especially affects the black model. So I recommend a skin with this device, it really does make a difference with reading..
  • There is no battery indicator or time showing while reading an ebook. However if you go to the home page the battery indicator shows in the top right corner, if you press the menu button from here the battery indicator disappears and the time shows up on the left hand side for a few seconds before it reverts back to the battery indicator.
  • The Home screen only shows shortcuts to recently added books. There is a way to change that so you can have recently opened show up as well, see: mobileread forums
  • The Sony PRS-T1 is rootable (meaning it's hackable). It runs a version of Android so that will always get developers interested. I have tried it and it works but I reverted back. I don't really see the point unless they get a way to have folders instead of collections to work with the stock reader. There is a new homescreen being developed for it, however, which might be interesting, I wasn't too fond of it right now as it had scrolling rather than arrows through collections and it kept flashing like crazy at me. May be worth a look as they work on it though. Check out the PRS-T1 Modding & Tweaks Wiki page that has all this information.

I might actually go for one like this one although I'm not too much of a gadgets fan, but you've made it so tempting :)

Hi. The cover in the first picture looks awesome, I want one of those for my T1 too. Any hints on where to purchase one?

It's an Oberon mini ebook reader sleeve designed for the Kindle 4. Fits the Sony T1 very nicely.
