Sookie the Telepathic Bar Maid
Sookie Stackhouse is the unique heroine of Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries. She is a beautiful, clever telepathic bar maid with a heart of gold, even for those supernatural beings without a heart beat. Sookie fans have been following her through the nine books that have been written so far, as she battles evil (both human and supernatural) and tries to do what is right and honorable. Sookie Stackhouse experiences life to its fullest as she learns to use her special gift. Sookie's television adventures on HBO began in the fall of 2008.

Three Reasons to love Sookie Stackhouse
1. Sookie has a kind and loving heart.
2. Sookie has overcome many diversities including her "little disability" and has learned to live in two very different worlds.
3. Sookie is a fighter and a survivor.
More Reasons to love Sookie
Usually, I am not a fan of horror books, but I do enjoy fantasy, science fiction and mysteries. I also enjoy strong female characters. The Sookie Stackhouse novels have all of this plus they are set in my home state of Louisiana, not too far from Shreveport, my old stomping grounds.
Sookie is a vulnerable, but strong young woman with a very open mind. Because of her "gift" (which she thinks of as more of a curse), she is able to accept the new world of the supernatural that she is thrust into when she saves the vampire, Bill Compton. Sookie is so unprejudiced that she is able to accept her discovery of the secret world of shape-shifters, weres, witches, fairies and demons without batting an eye. Her wonderful sense of humor and her broad minded outlook on life enables her to take things in stride that would cripple most humans.
Family is important to Sookie. Even though her family is small (and is getting smaller), she is loyal to each and every one of them, even though they sometimes don't deserve it. Sookie also keeps her promises, even when it means that she has to do something that is distasteful to her. She is a diamond in the rough and I look forward to finding out how she will develop, mature and shine.

Both are worthy of a huge fan base. I am, personally, glad that the books and the HBO series have unique qualities. Or maybe it has been so long since I read Dead Until Dark that I do not remember what happened. Sometimes it is an advantage to being over 50 (memory lapses!) So, I vote for both being the best! But, since I love to read, and I cannot vote for both in this module, I will pick the Books!

- Thanks Susan,
I think the books are 10 times better than the HBO series, TrueBlood. I've only seen season 1 of TrueBlood, but I found it lacked the fun and the humor that made the books so enjoyable and that it got more dark and depressing with each episode.
