Sooty and Sweep

Ranked #9,589 in Entertainment, #118,430 overall

How Sooty Started

Sooty began life in 1948 when Harry Corbett was holidaying in Blackpool and bought his son (then 3 years of age), a glove puppet of a teddy bear.

Harry then used the puppet in his entertainment show, giving it a water pistol and a xylophone.

In 1952, Sooty appeared on TV - Harry re-named the bear sooty after covering its ears and nose with soot as part of trying to make the bear unique.

Sooty also became a magician, carrying a wand and uttering the phrase: "Izzy Wizzy Lets Get Busy"

Harry Corbett also uttered the phrase "Bye Bye Everybody, Bye Bye" at the end of every show as Sooty waved.

Sooty

Sooty - a famous and long lived British glove puppet character and TV star.

Sooty's television programmes started in the 1950's and is the longest running children's programme in the United Kingdom.

Did you know that Sooty will be 63 years old on 19th July 2011?

Did you know that Sooty was originally devised by Harry Corbett who was the nephew of famous fish and chip shop chain owner - Harry Ramsden?

Did you know that Sooty's first appearance on Television in 1952 on the BBC's Talent Night programme? Sooty with Harry Corbett, went on to win the show's final.

Sooty and his best friend, Sweep, starred regularly on the BBC's childrens show "Saturday Special" from 1952 to 1955.

Sooty's Friends...the main characters

Sweep - the grey Spaniel dog with long black ears.
Soo - the black and white panda.
Scampi - Sooty's cousin.
Butch - the fierce looking black dog.
Ramsbottom - the snake with a Yorkshire accent and a habit of rambling on with stories.
Kipper the Cat - a cat who was always falling asleep.
Little Cousin Scampi - a smaller, less intelligent teddy bear than Sooty.

Sweep

Sooty and SweepSweep the grey coloured dog and Sooty's best friend.

Sweep's love of bones and sausages and generally slightly dim witted antics made him a favourite and joyful character. Sweep was certainly my favourite as a child.

But this dog didn't bark. Instead he uttered a series of high pitched squeaks that all of the other puppets seemed to understand, but which left the audience second guessing.

Soo

SooSoo was very prim and proper and kept both Sooty and Sweep firmly in check.

In earlier episodes, Soo played the girlfriend of Sooty.

The original voice artist for Soo was Harry Corbett's wife, Marjorie.
