Shopaholic Series: Start at Your Own Risk!

Sophie Kinsella and the Shopaholic Novels

I don't know what it is about these Shopaholic novels. They are like the literary equivalent of a cupcake-- sugary and addictive, and guilt-inducing. I think the obvious draw is the main character, Becky (Bloomwood) Brandon, whose crazy mind Kinsella takes you into for every book. Yes, you want to yell at her and smack her for the incessant rationalizations and dubious decisions (especially now that she has a husband and a two year old), but you have to envy the way Kinsella is so prolific with these books as well as delivering an actual plot (however light and fluffy) with each one. Here's the thing with the Shopaholic series-- once you start, you won't be able to stop (for better or worse), so beware!

Love it! Great read.

Sorry, not my cup of tea.

MTLwordsmith says:

I read the first of the Shopaholic books and am very regretful that I will never get those two hours back. I thought it was narcissistic and really poorly constructed/developed. The literary equivalent of a bag of Doritos. I will say though - that if someone who doesn't normally read at all loves this series and it inspires them to spend more time reading - it's a plus.
