Sore Ears! You are probably allergic TO~~

OUCH! ALLERGIC TO EARRINGS! Allergic to Nickel!

I have always had trouble wearing earrings for very long, my ear lobes would get sore and swollen and sometimes even get knots in them if I wore the earrings too long!!!  Even wearing them for one evening out and I would have itchy ear lobes at the end of the evening.  I have read several articles over the years and now I understand why, here is some of what I learned.

For millions of people, pretty earrings are a synonym for "ouch." When they wear clip-on or pierced earrings, their ears begin to itch and burn. Within a couple of hours, the pain, weeping skin and, in extreme cases, bleeding and pus, force them to ruefully remove the earrings. Their condition is called contact dermatitis. It is caused by contact with material the victim is allergic to or has become sensitized to. In this case, victims have become sensitized to metal in the earrings. (A better known example of contact dermatitis is a rash caused by poison ivy.)

My story is similar to many women. Studies of nickel plated earrings show that 10 to 15 percent of females suffered contact dermatitis, according to Dr. Barry Asman, an allergist at the Allergy and Asthma Care Center in Monroeville. Physicians say sufferers are most likely to be allergic to nickel, a common jewelry filler.  Nickel, in jewelry, snaps and buckles, is the fastest growing and biggest cause of contact skin rashes in North America today, states the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. "Nickel allergies have increased 40% during the past five years," says Dr. Scheinman.
