Sossusvlei Namibia

If you happen to be on a travel in Namibia, you must include in your itinerary Sossusvlei, its famous highlight which lies in the heart of the Namib Desert. A trip to this particular region is too overwhelming that anyone who can be there would love to stay and spend one more day just to feel the real existence of nature.

Sossusvlei Travel

Sossusvlei is described as a huge clay pan encircled by gigantic sand dunes. The amazing hills of sand surrounding this pan-like highlight reaches up to 300 meters high, the highest being recorded in the whole world, and one of the most astounding sights. It is beyond man's imagination that this height can just be explored by climbing barefoot. It is also believed that this extreme desert which covers almost Namib-Naukluft Park is the oldest dune the reason for its bright, striking color. While its spectacular view is too stunning, the perfect time to take a closer look and appreciate its intense beauty is few minutes to sunrise and sunset. The breathtaking effect of strong colors constantly changing during these moment are too empowering that you cannot hold yourself from taking a wonderful photo souvenir.

Namibia must be truly gifted by nature with spectacular landscapes and an almost mind-boggling Sossusvlei, which formerly was used to strictly describe that huge clay pan. Truly a wonder site of a mud river which evaporated into a white clay so dry that the long years of existence searches its way through the dunes. And what is so amazing and remarkable in this dry pan is the fact that no amount of moist is capable of making a natural or normal decomposition to take place, keeping all the dead trees perfectly preserved for centuries now.

Sossusvlei, during some exceptional times with heavy rainfall, may be filled with water, however, the dunes surrounding it prevents the water from flowing down further. And again, the rarely water-filled clay pan is a grand sight for Namibian's that they flock around to witness its rare beauty. But nowadays, the whole area that covers the vast plain of the Tsauchab River along with the red dunes that rolls like gigantic guards from the south and north of the plain is known as the most visited Sossusvlei.

Another amazing attraction in this area is the Sesriem Canyon which name has been derived from the early African explorers, which used six (afrikaan 'ses') leather thongs (thong is Afrikaan 'riem') in order to reach the water down the river. The canyon was then a barely noticeable deep cleft in a stony ground which eventually expanded and leveled out into the plain. Being deep and sheltered, it frequently holds water during the dry seasons.

And what is too exciting about this Sossusvlei adventure, just like other adventures down Namibia, is that, these are accessible and can be done through self-drive trips. Yet, whatever you choose, the adventure can be just splendid. A walk in the dunes can be very overwhelming too, but never get lost; it is not a joke to be lost in the Namib Desert. Stick to the track, don't go aimlessly. And what more, you do not have to worry for the night's abode, while there; you can be comfortably settled in the many excellent accommodation in and around the area. Simply pick your choice, they all offer the grandest accommodation you need. So don't hesitate, book your Namibia travel for an unforgettable experience in Africa!
