Sossusvlei, Namibia: The home of the world's largest Sand Dunes

Sossusvlei in Namibia, Southern Africa, is famous for its huge sand dunes; the biggest sand-dunes in the world. Located about 4 to 5 hours drive away from the capital city, Windhoek.

Sossusvlei is a must-see location. A perfect place to stop for a few days or even just one night, if you are travelling in Namibia. A typical safari trip to namibia might include a visit to Sossusvlei en route to Etosha National Park.

Places to Stay in Sossuslei

Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp

The Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp in Sossusvlei a fantastic place to stay, surrounded by huge sand dunes. Cabins on stilts, with balconies and small plunge-pools, on the edge of a cliff, look out across the wilderness to the dunes many miles away. We dropped the car at the thatched reception and were driven through the camp in a 4x4 to the lodge/bar for check-in. We partook in a medicinal gin and tonic and enjoyed the most memorable of sunsets, followed by an exploration of the stars with a large telescope, escorted by a member of staff (The sky is so clear and the light pollution negligible) A wonderful dinner was served to all the guests, with free wine (my favorite variety) The Wilderness Camp provide guides and transport to explore the dunes, setting out before sunrise and stopping for a picnic breakfast. Not much wildlife apart from the usual springbok, birds of prey etc. but the sunrise over the enormous dunes is stunning.

I would love to go here. I was supposed to install a computer system in Namibia, but it fell through. I could have ended up installing in most of Africa had it all gone ahead. Kenya was the only country I managed to visit in the end.

Another wonderfully done lens, Andy! I imagined those were your footprints on that dune ridge. I still want to travel in your suitcase some day! Beautifully done and I see that beautiful Purple Star shining here!
