PRESCOTT SWEET ADELINES
Song of the Pines Chorus is a performing and competing Sweet Adeline chorus that has been a big part of the Prescott, Arizona music scene for more than forty-five years. This chorus sings four-part barbershop harmony and serves it up a cappella style (in other words, without musical accompaniment.)
Unlike traditional choral music where the melody is typically reserved for the soprano (or top voice), barbershop is sung with the melody in the second voice. This is known as the "lead" part. The highest voice is referred to as the "tenor", and the two bottom voices are the baritone and bass parts.
Song of the Pines Chorus is very animated when they sing, which is true to the Sweet Adeline barbershop style of singing. The chorus commits to telling the story both physically and emotionally through the music. These women love what they do and their audiences love them for it.
Song of the Pines Chorus is a proud member of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide non-profit organization of women singers committed to advancing the art form of barbershop harmony through education and performance. If you love to sing and perform (or think you might like to try), you've definitely come to the right place.
ADDED BONUS: If you're new in town, this is an incredible way to make friends that will last a lifetime.

IMPROVE YOUR SINGING SKILLS
Educational Resources
We've heard it a thousand times from our directors and coaches. Singing starts with proper breathing. Singing should be effortless. Vowels should be formed inside the mouth. The tongue should lay flat in your mouth, resting against the back of your bottom teeth. Your jaw should be loose. Your ribs should be expanded... blah blah blah.
Sometimes it really helps to hear it from a different source in a different way to make a lightbulb go off in your head. The following resources provide helpful information for beginners to more experienced singers. Perhaps one of them will resonate with you.

PITCH PIPES
Be Prepared!
A pitch pipe is a must have item for every good barbershopper. You never know when you might be called upon to sing Happy Birthday or to sing a tag with your buddies. Women typically use a C to C pitch pipe. Men typically use an F to F.
ENTERTAINER'S SECRET
Throat Spray for Singers
You're about to step on stage and your throat is feeling dry and your voice is a little hoarse. If this has ever happened to you, be sure to carry a bottle of Entertainers Secret in your purse. This safe and effective throat spray is to the voice what lip balm is to chapped lips.

- Our poll is showing that lead is the least favorite part to sing at this moment with a mere 16.7%. Bass is the overall favorite with 41.7%. Tenor and baritone are currently tied at 20.8%. Very interesting!

- I just returned from our annual chorus retreat at Chapel Rock. What an incredible weekend of singing, dancing, sisterhood and FUN! Our vocal coach, Chris Robertson served up some fabulous vocalization techniques that helped raise our voices to a new level, and Dawn Castiglione connected our visual plan with some much needed characterization. WOW -- what a difference! Pasadena, here we come -- WOOT!

- I just loved the singing Valentine from my husband - put together by Judi Williams! I especially liked my song: Cuddle Up. I hummed it for days but wouldn't dare to sing it outloud after the stunningly profesional performance by Judi's quartet. Fabulous idea and it made me feel very special.

- I was honored to be a part of the singing quartet + 2. I had never done it before and oh how rewarding it was. Singing is in the blood and it is truly a blessing to be part of the Sweet Adelines Song of The Pines Chorus. Once you have done there is nothing better. We got to sing to a couple that had been married 62 years and when we began singing she grabbed her husbands hand and wouldn't let go. It was priceless!! Singing has fulfilled a dream for me as well as having new friends and an extended family. I feel it is the best thing since sliced bread.

- Today was our last day for delivering singing Valentine's. We had quite an array of customers - everything from the Yavapai Casino to CoCo's Restaurant to unique store on Cortez which sells antiques. A great event happened to the four of us! We decided to get some eats at the Apple Pan on Gurley. It was really crowded, so while we waited for our table, we decided to sing. Owners, Sue Ann & Mark Duncan remembered us from last year, so were very happy to have us return. Well, as the old saying goes - we sang for our supper. We were treated to breakfast, so we continued to treat their customers to more songs. We just loved the affection and applause we received the the Apple Pan customers.
By 6:00pm, Rosemary, Carol, Donna and I were running out of steam! We had one last order to fill! And what an order it was. We were invited by the children of Jim and Arlene Sackrel to help celebrate their parents' 67th wedding anniversary! We ended on a high note in more ways than one!
This was truly one of the best years SOTP had in our Valentine's delivery program. We had three quartets working the area.
Now on to further preparation for retreat and competition!

- It was my great pleasure to sing with three great friends and fellow singers in SOTP. We stopped by a local shore store, The Shoe Box on Gurley, where I purchased a RED pair of shoes. Naturally, we had to sing a song! The owner asked us to deliver a song to her husband, which we will do on Sunday.
Today, though, was a special treat for me. My mother-in-law wanted to spend her 85th birthday in Prescott and have her children join her. My friends, Rosemary (Tenor), Carol T. (Lead), Donna (Bass) and I, Judi W. (Baritone), sang to my husband's family. They had heard me speak many times about my "little singing group" and tonight, they got a full on shot of what we do. To say they were impressed is not enough. Each of them told me several times during the evening of how wonderful it was to experience our quartet!
Thanks again, ladies, for making this such a special day for my husband's family.
There was a certain "naughty" apron involved, but that story is for another day!
