French Holidays Review

Holiday review and video of southern France, in the Bordeaux region visiting some of the local attractions and the beaches of course, including a boat trip around De I'lle Aux Oiseaux (bird island), which was ok but not the best of boat trips which I've been on.

The most memorable attraction of the week has to be our walk around the local Ornithological Park (Bird Park).

Chateau de Cazeneuve

Sanquinel

This 13th century castle (not far from the Ciron Gorges) has been restored to its original state, apart from the plastic ducks in the pond and the bamboo garden, and it lacks the original moat. The castle was originally the residence for kings of Navarre and later occupied by King Henri IV of France and his wife Queen Margot.

Usually when we visit a Chateau (castle) in France we are impressed but on this occasion not so. After a long drive to arrive mid-morning we discovered the tour wasn't until due for a couple of hours so we walked around the grounds for a while, looking at the bamboo garden and plastic ducks on the ponds; and then had a picnic before returning to the castle only to discover that the cost of the tour was rather steep for just half an hour. So we cut our losses and made our way to somewhere else; we weren't the only ones to forgo the tour; of the half a dozen cars there two of us left in quick succession.

Bassin D'Arcachon

lle Aux Oiseaux

For the week we rented a ground floor flat in the suburbs of Bassin D'Arcachon, and on our day of arrival temperatures soured to 40C (104F) and stayed there for a few days before dropping down to between 30C and 35C for the rest of the week.

We spent as much time as we could on the beaches, glorious soft and very fine sand with warm seas for bathing; the bay of Arcachon is an inland basin and therefore protected from the Atlantic Ocean making the waters very calm and ideal for swimming. But we did a bit of sightseeing as well, including a visit around the bay to see bird island, De I'lle Aux Oiseaux; and the wetlands wildlife bird sanctuary parc ornithologique in the Teich, a suburb of Arcachon. And being in the Bordeaux area we had to make it a day trip to visit Bordeaux, and after spending a few hours wandering around the shops we finished the day with a picnic in one of its parks and watched the swans and ducks in the large manmade like in the centre of the park, le lac du parc Bordelais

Recommendations

Bird Park and the Dune Pyla

Of all the places we visited I would highly recommend the Bird Sanctury in Teich, parc ornithologique; at a steady stroll around stopping to observe the birds from some of the many hides and observation points, about a three mile round trip, it's a good half day spent.

I would also recommend the beaches, the sand grains are really soft and fine (just like in an egg timer) and very light in colour.

And the other must see is La Grande Dune du Pyla, also on the edge of Arcachon bay; and at over 100 metres it the highest sand dune in Europe; the top of the dune is an ideal spot to watch the sunset, which in the summer months is at about 10pm.
