Stats I would like to see: How many white South Africans experienced some form of discrimination in NZ; the time it took to find a job; whether people managed to find jobs similar to the ones they had in SA or on a higher or lower level; attitudes of other South Africans - in NZ and at home; whether people would like to have a SA club to belong to in NZ or would prefer to blend in with Kiwis; how long it took before they felt settled in; age groups of migrants.

We were obviously very luck because, although I was dreading having to deal with the NZ immigration officers upon our arrival, it all went so smoothly I was absolutely amazed! We did have Aus visas in our passports and I had started the immigration process, but I had not yet been granted PR and I did not have a work permit, although I had a job to go to. Anyway, they granted us PR on arrival at the airport. I must say, I think the Aus visas had a lot to do with it.

My family and I have been here since May 2008 and are still trying to get over the homesickness. We have encountered some very nice kiwis but must be honest to say that we have found the Maoris far more open and accepting of us. Being an electrician has its irritations because we are far more qualified then the locals however you are treated as if you are still doing an apprenticeship. Regardless we are here to stay and cannot wait for our residence to come through.

It stills gets getting use to the safety and cleanliness. The Kiwi's do not however understand that SAindutrial standards are much more advanced and their attitude is one of "You cam e to us so we must be much more advanced". And rightfully you must sluk one's words. And boet, are they naartjies when they lose at Rugby. But all things considered, it is great to let ones kids take a train to town knowing the incidence of them being accosted will be very low. Great place, great landscape, extremely friendly people and a great diversity of people.
