Southampton Passion 2011: the vision
I have a vision that on Good Friday 2011, thousands of people will gather to watch Southampton's very own Passion play. A large scale production that will incorporate acting, music and song, and will place Jesus back at the very heart of Easter. The action will unfold in Guildhall Square, Southampton as the crowds witness Jesus' entry to Jerusalem, his last supper with the disciples, his arrest and crucifixion and then his glorious resurrection.
On Good Friday, 2006 the City of Manchester staged an amazing outdoor Passion play that used the music of the great city to tell the story of the last days of the life of Jesus. It was broadcast on BBC three and boasted some popular actors in its cast. On Good Friday, 2008 the city of Winchester was host to an equally remarkable Passion production, using various locations across the city and ending up at the great Cathedral for the final scenes. Some 8,000 people lined the streets of Winchester to witness this dramatic retelling of the life, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, and they were reminded of the real meaning of Easter.
I was part of the Winchester Passion in 2008 and I believe God planted a seed in my heart to bring a similar event to the centre of Southampton. Our Passion will be different to the others mentioned here - it will be in one location, Hoglands Park in the heart of our city. It will be more of a musical production with characters using new and original songs to tell parts of the story and the aim is to produce a very professional, high quality production that will put Jesus right back at the heart of Easter.
The script is already written, the songs are beginning to form and the word about the Southampton Passion is starting to spread.
-Neil Maddock, Writer
About the writer, Neil Maddock
Neil lives here in Southampton with his wife, Julia and their three young children. He is part of the leadership team at Southampton Christian Fellowship (SCF), an AOG Church that meets at the Augustine Centre in Northam and has just completed his training to become an accredited minister in the AOG movement. Neil believes God has called him to be someone who creatively communicates the love of God to people.Neil studied Performing Arts and Religious Studies at the University of Gloucestershire where he earned a BA Hons degree before spending a year working with Youth for Christ as a member of Activate - their itinerant theatre company. This year was spent touring around the UK performing in schools and colleges, running events and even taking RE and English lessons! He and Julia then spent two years working in New Zealand, as part of Detour Theatre Company, a ministry of YWAM. The two years were spent touring with various productions, local church performance, running classes and workshops and establishing a community theatre programme. During his time in NZ, Neil also began to develop more of a music ministry and had the opportunity to record an album of original songs. It was whilst in NZ that he began writing scripts and he has continued to develop this craft ever since and has now written his most adventurous script yet - the Southampton Passion.
Neil is currently the project manager for the Kipper Cafe, a community cafe project based in Northam and is also working on establishing a community arts project in the area that will seek to offer opportunities for people to train in performing arts.

Neil Maddock is one man with a vision, but he needs people who want to be part of this adventure so that we can bring this dream alive together.
We continue to build our core management team comprising people who will take responsibility for key areas of the development of the project.Roles that we are still looking to fill are:

You will need to work with our core management team to ensure that the public are cared for at the venue and licensing laws are respected. Please get in touch with more information.
Stage Building Crew
We need people that are physically able to build stages, move fencing and build marques and tents. Please include availability for Wednesday 20th - Saturday 23rd April 2011 if known yet.
Technical Crew
We need people to help with the more technical side of the show including installing lights, operating cameras and PA systems. Previous experience and some skills in this area preferred.

School Liaison Officer
Many schools cover the Easter story as part of their RE curriculum and we want to ensure that schools in the City are aware of what we are doing and offer them the chance to see this event. We also want to offer schools the chance to meet some of the cast, get to know more about the characters that make up the Easter story and look at other ways that we can work with schools in the area. This role will take a lead on covering this area of the project.
Follow-up Coordinator
The Passion will happen on one evening (and maybe one afternoon), but we are praying that it will change people's lives forever. We are looking for someone who can ensure that there is adequate follow up in place on the night and after so that people who want to know more about Jesus and the Christian faith will have a clear way of finding out how they can do this.
Props Coordinator
Ensure that all necessary props are gathered together and are well looked after during the rehearsal period.
