Another great lens. I didn't have a chance to travel this route before. I love the idea Going the Road Less Traveled. It is full of adventure. Good or bad, you have stories to tell after this adventure.

I took a similar trip in 1992, to travel on what was left of US Highway 80, from Tybee Island, Georgia to San Diego, California. I have a couple of pictures in my lense, but after seeing this I will have to add some more!

Been thru the entire route a few times. If you head up to Sedona from Phoenix, you have to visit Oak Creek Canyon. A wonderful picturesque creek that flows through towering canyons. Several pull off parking places and a few National Forest Campgrounds. Great swimming.

This is a pretty good travel guide. I feel like the cross country tour types often overlook what a trip down I-10 has to offer vacationers. From Austin to L.A. though things can be a bit dull if you are not right in the middle of a major city or tourist trap though. I consider that part of the charm of the trip though.
  • EricOlsen Dec 6, 2011 @ 6:06 pm | delete

Having made the trip from Jacksonville, FL to California and back several times, I can tell your readers it is a wonderful adventure. For a more scenic route you can start or finish the adventure in San Diego ("America's Finest City") by using Interstate 8, which joins with I-10 in Phoenix, Arizona. You will marvel at the dunes in the California dessert and stand in awe passing through the soaring mountains. Once you arrive in San Diego, you can enjoy a drive up to coast to Los Angeles and beyond. Santa Barbara, the riviera of the west coast, is an easy day trip from LA.

For oyster lovers travelling the Southern Route, I have three recommendations. First, eat a dozen raw at the Acme Oyster House in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Secondly, try the Oyster Sampler Platter at Wintzell's Oyster House in downtown Mobile. Thirdly, when going through the Florida panhandle, get off the interstate and visit the Oyster Capital of Florida, Apalachicola.

I traveled this route once years ago and did not enjoy driving through Texas for two days. My car broke down there in the middle of nowhere. But what I did like was driving along the southeast portion of it through Mississppi and Louisiana along the Gulf Coast and over the many bodies of water.
  • John_Michael Nov 20, 2011 @ 9:42 am | delete
I would avoid taking Interstate 10 and really see America using a different route.

It was 10 years ago and I don't remember if that was the highway, and we came from Massachusetts, so we went through DC, Tennessee, through Texas, I know I just missed one, and wow Texas was something else, then we headed straight to LA. We were able to take a helicopter ride when they still did that over the Grand Canyon, that was amazing!

I spent quite a bit of time in the beautiful land of Scotland. I remember showing the locals pictures of me back in Arizona and they always commented on how beautiful it was. It's funny, because I never thought of it like that. Here I was in one of the greenest, must plush areas in the world and they were telling me that what I thought was a barren desert was beautiful. There really is beauty in everything, if we know where to find it.

I love all your travel lenses, and this one passes very close to where I live in Arizona. Sedona is about 40 minutes south of here and a few thousand feet lower, so I go there a lot, especially in the winter when I can drive "downhill" for under an hour and warm up. Excellent lens! *Blessed by an angel on the Back to School Bus Tour*

Since I lived in Baton Rouge for many years, we have traveled I-10 east many times. My family took a trip to California, too, and finished the western leg. I enjoyed traveling with you. Sprinkled with dust from the Angel of the farmyard on a Back to School Field Trip.

For anyone interested in Civil War history, Creek Indian history or civil rights history, Montgomery, Alabama is a good place to spend a day (3.5 hours north from Panama City). Also, the Blount Cultural Park includes a gorgeous park around the Alabama Shakespeare Festival/Theater and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.

One of the best lenses I've read, made me want to take the trip!

Hope you don't mind if I make one correction. Under "What's Cool" in Texas section, the Dallas area has Six Flags not Sea World; Sea World is in San Antonio.

Great lens.. all my favorite places. Living in the Los Angeles area.. I can't imagine ever wanting to live anywhere else. San Diego is a fun place to spend some time.. nice beaches.. Sea World and the San Diego Zoo.

Santa Fe New Mexico is one of my favorite places.. a little ways off the I-10.. but well worth the trip.

San Antonio is another of my favorite places.. love the Riverwalk! I could probably live down there if I wasn't so in love with California.

Ahhh.. and New Orleans.. love that city too! Wonderful food.. don't miss Brennan's for breakfast or the Commander's Palace for dinner. And the antiques found down there are to die for.

nothing like the wide open road. Did your southern route by train some years ago. Same destinations, less driving. Next time I will drive and stop at some of those smaller towns. Similar drive where I am in Australia. Sydney-Perth. A long long way but so worth it. Your life will not be complete until you have done it. :-)

  • BarbRad Feb 26, 2011 @ 10:43 pm | delete
Do I have to pick a favorite? I love San Diego, but that was a side trip. I lived in Long Beach and in Culver City, so those were home. I was surprised you left Taos off, but maybe it was too far off I-10. My trip was so long ago it's hard to remember. Come to think of it, I think we took I-40 though AZ an NM, which is why I didn't see much of this road trip. I want to see Sedona and Oak Creek, but wouldn't have missed Utah's national parks or Mesa Verde. I hope to make your trip. It's on my bucket list to see the South, since it's the only part of the country I have done more than drive through in a hurry. Closest I've been is really Virginia, where I was able to see more than rest stops and restaurants and motels. Great lens so far.
  • Shirts-And-Travel Feb 26, 2011 @ 9:57 pm | delete
Great lens! Favorite site on the I-10 route is Santa Monica, California (and its pier). Biloxi, MS and "L.A." (Lower Alabama) are good, too. A whole I-10 trip is a great way to experience different cultures - from the Southwest feel to the southern hospitality.

Great lens! I've often wanted to take a cross country trip, but I think I would want to stay off the interstates. Too bad that a good portion of the older US 80/90 routes have been replaced or eliminated. Still, it would be fun going coast to coast! Thanks again for the information!

What a great lens. I'm taking a 3 week road trip with my teenage son this summer. Looking forward to it, and many of the places you mentioned are all ready on our list. Can't wait to see Sedona again...just breathtaking!
  • dreamtravelvacation Jan 20, 2011 @ 5:33 pm | delete
Road trip is fun! Last time I went on a road trip (solo) was in 2000. I drove thru Sedona at night time and was not able to stay overnight to see the town. Seven years later, I finally went back to Sedona and was able to explore that town. It truly was beautiful. Your lens makes me want to take a road trip again! :-)

Have traveled the whole length of I-10 only once. It was very interesting passing through all kinds of topography to include coastline, bayou, deserts, etc. It was my first time seeing Pipe Organ Cactus in Arizona. I also remember all the red clay in the southern gulf states and the mesas in Texas. Boy, what a long drive through Texas! Thanks for this informative lens along with the video of the Grand Canyon!

Great snappy and beautifully laid out lens! Really does highlight that there's so much to see and discover down south, and all over the States for that matter. It's a union of 50 states, each one distinct in its own right and it's great to see content that reflects that and reminds us of that.

Many thanks for a wonderful overview to get the travel juices flowing. I feel a road trip coming on!

What an excellent resource! I've traveled most of I-10 between Florida & California at some point. You mentioned the Chihuahuan Desert near El Paso, Texas. That area borders the Davis Mountains. The town of Balmorhea is just south of I-10, home of Balmorhea State Park with a 80,000 square foot spring-fed pool. The town of Fort Davis is close too, home of the University of Texas McDonald Observatory. Stop by after dark for the Star Party where you get to look through their ultra cool telescopes. Also that part of the Davis Mountains is almost 6,000 foot elevation so it's a lot cooler than the rest of Texas in the summer (85 degrees there versus 100 in the rest of the state)

This is all so amazing. Wish I could go do it tomorrow. I've only travelled from Dublin to the west coast but I have loved it both times. Vegas is my favorite spot. My new husband proposed to me at the Grand Canyon so it's all special to me. Can't wait to go back again. Love the lens you certainly know how to grab attention and interest.

G'Day Kiwi, on your way through Phoenix be sure to stop off in Scottsdale, Arizona. Once described by the New York Times as "A Desert Version Of South Beach." A destination city packed with resorts, spas, restaurants, art, theatre, golf courses, sports and shopping.

Hi Kiwis. You highlight some great spots here. Never been to LA, but love San Diego and Yosemite is the best. Already commented on the Grand Circle, but my home is in the S'east and I lived in Pensacola, Fla. for five years which I10 runs right through. Glad you mentioned Charleston where I went to school at The Citadel and Hilton Head where we have a timeshare... great spots all. Thanks so much for flying over my learning lens and leaving Angel dust and comments that are much appreciated. Carpe' Diem!

Fun and informative lens. I've traveled this great country of ours from coast to coast and north to south over the past 45 years and have driven along Route I-10 many times -- not all at once. Done the San Diego, CA to Arizona portion several times, all across Florida from Jacksonville to the Gulf on I-10, an on into Louisiana and a portion of Texas. Only section I haven't done is all the way across Texas on 1-10. So much to see, so many things to do, a beautiful group of states to travel through. Thanks for summing it all up so well. 5*

Oh Man...I have driven the I-10, I-20, and the I-30 routes and the I-95 from noth to south on more than a few occasions. Much of it God blessed beautiful, but much of it kept it hard to keep my eyes open. There is a lot of desert and farmland out there. But, the stench of the cattle ranches, especially during the summer, is horrid enough to wake the dead.lol. Enjoyed this lens very much.

I have always wanted to make this trip...after reading this, I almost jumped on the bike and went, but yikes it's cold out ;)

The Mississippi actually flowed backwards for 3 days after an earthquake in the 1800's.

I'm going to lensroll this to 2 of my lenses. Let's see if you can figure out which 2 :))

Nice Lens. I traveled I-10 a few years ago going from East to West. I was in a big motor home pulling a 26 ft. trailer loaded with 5 gokarts, 1 valkarie motorcycle and every tool know to man. We were headed to Laguna Seca. Along for the "trip from Hell" were 3 men (1 was my husband) and one other woman besides myself. The girls' job was to keep the guys awake. We replaced four of six tires on the trailer and 4 of six tires on the motor home. The trip was accomplished in 3 days - driving day and night.

I will never repeat that trip. I would, however, like to make the trip again and stop in nice places.
