My Favorite Southern Cookbooks

Southern cookbooks are plentiful, of that, there is no doubt.  So how do you choose the good ones?  Well, obviously it's a matter of personal taste.  But I'll let you know MY criteria, and if you agree with me on what YOU think makes a great southern cookbook, you should take a look at my favorites.

I prefer southern cookbooks that have old-fashioned southern recipes.  I don't like the fancy-schmancy cookbooks that claim to be southern but include recipes like "pan seared ahi tuna with white wine sauce."

I enjoy cookbooks that tell stories about southern life, southern food, southern history and southern living.  I really enjoy reading about the life and times of southern people, especially when it comes to southern food!

I prefer it if the cookbook has some pictures.  They don't HAVE to have a full-color picture of every recipe, but it sure would be nice!

So here we go.  Below you see my top picks for my favorite southern cookbooks, and I've read hundreds!

UPDATE:  Apparently someone either hates my lens or thought they were being funny or rude by rating my lens a "1" (maybe it was my lens comeptition! Hehe!), so I would appreciate it if any visitors would also rate my lens.  If you truly feel it's a "1", rate it that so I can try to improve this lens, but please, be honest. :)  Thanks!

Some of my favorite southern cookbooks from a variety of authors.

The Foxfire Book of Appalachian Cookery

This is my all-time favorite southern cookbook. It has amazing stories from souther old-timers, REAL southern recipes like ramps and leather breeches, and just an overall amazing experience. I would just about rather die than give this book up!

The Little House Cookbook: Frontier Foods from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Classic Stories

I've always been a big fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books, and of the television show that was loosely based on them. This book is no exception. You'll read REAL recipes from the American frontier, and this is what southern cooking is all about. These folks have some GREAT Missouri cooking!

Nathalie Dupree's Southern Memories: Recipes and Reminiscences

I used to watch Nathalie Dupree's New Southern Cooking on PBS and I would write down the recipes furiously. Boy was I glad to receive this book as a gift when I was a young teenager. I have cherished it ever since. I am a HUGE fan of her Brunswick Stew recipe. It gets rave reviews every time I make it!
