As there is so much controversy regarding the confederate flag, it is necessary to go over some dates and facts in history, briefly, before talking about it. First you will receive some information about the origin and evolution of the confederate flag. The Confederate States of America formed in the early 1861. It was obviously a necessity at the time to create a new flag for a new nation, the confederate flag. For this purpose the Committee on the Flag and Seal was formed to deal with the job. Basically there were two different trends or schools of thought in creating the flag.
One was for creating a flag very similar to the existing US flag. The other supported the idea of making a totally different one. As there was still a strong feeling of allegiance to the original American flag, the popular opinion was also in favor of a confederate flag that would be similar to the old one. As a result such a flag was created and proposed. This firstly proposed flag resembled the old one but it replaced the stripes with three bars. It had seven stars, one for each member of the confederacy at the time and it was named "Stars and Bars".
Even today, people still refer sometimes to this confederate flag as the "Stars and Bars". The other group proposed several different flags for the new confederate flag, one of which resembled the flag that was to become the Confederate Battle flag later on. The battle flag of the confederacy was typically square but as it is dispalayed today, it is rectangular in shape and its proportions are similar to those of other national and state flags. The question that keeps arising is whether the confederate flag was always square at the time of the Civil.
In the spring of1861 the supporters of the similar flag won their case and the "Stars and Bars" became the first official national confederate flag. It was first used officially on the 4th of March 1861 on the occasion of the inauguration of Jefferson Davies. In time more states joined the Confederacy and, normally more stars had to be added to the design of the confederate flag. The number of stars amounted to 13 eventually. This new flag gained widespread acceptance and allegiance within the confederate army and among the large public, too. The national confederate flag is almost forgotten today and the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia has become the symbol most often associated with the confederacy. It still remains a controversial topic and a divisive symbol in the present.

Rebel Flag Information
There is no strict definition for the term rebel flag. But it generally refers to flags used by people who at one time or another, in history, took the opposite side as compared to those in control of a nation, organization etc. When discussing American flags, it is known that in the Civil War period, many Southern states did not stay with the Union and they wanted their own flags. Thus in the American history we see the development of the rebel flags as quite active and prolific in that period. The name rebel flag actually comes from these Confederate or Rebel states which separated and wished for their own flag to be flown. Hence the name rebel flag.
Civil War Flags
Many of these civil war flags have been preserved due to the actions of Pennsylvania Capitol Preservation Committee who have about 390 civil war flags for the state of Pennsylvania in their custody. The design of the civil war flags was similar to that of the National flag, the Stars and Stripes which was enacted into law on the 4th of April 1818. Yet, this act established the basic pattern of the flag as we know it today without defining the arrangement of the stars.

The national confederate flag is almost forgotten today and the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia has become the symbol most often associated with the confederacy. It still remains a controversial topic and a divisive symbol in the present.
Flag Etiquette
Flags are important, sacred symbols of every nation and this is why standards of respect have been set up with regard to them. The flag etiquette is the flag code which formalizes and unifies the traditional manners in which a flag is given respect. The flag etiquette also contains specific instructions on how the flag must not be used. According to the flag etiquette, the flag should be cleaned and mended when it is necessary. When the flag is lowered the flag etiquette says it must not by any means be left to touch the ground or any other object but it must be received with waiting hands and arms.
Pirate Flags
The decline of piracy did not make pirate flags and symbols dissapear completely. Actually, the skull-and-crossbone design has been used by different military units as a unit identification ensign or a victory flag ascribing the famous ferocity and cruelty of the pirates to themselves. Unofficially, the symbols of the pirate flags have been used to point out electric hazard; in this case the background is blood red and the skull and bones are black.
Rebel Flags
The best known of the rebel flags remains the Confederate Battle Flag, especially since it appeared in a popular TV show called Dukes of Hazard. In the show, the flag was painted on the top of the car belonging to the Duke Boys. Besides, this Confederate flag has appeared on a number of southern state flags at different times. At present, the only state which still keeps the rebel flag as part of their state flag, is Mississippi.
State Flags
Modern state flags date back to the 1890s when, at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, the states expressed their wish to have distinctive symbols. Most American state flags were designed and adopted between 1893 and the Second World War and, according to a 2001 survey by the North American Vexillological Association, New Mexico has the best-designed flag of any U.S. state, U.S. territory, or Canadian province, whereas Georgia's 2001-2003 state flag was rated the worst indesign.
Texas Flag
The current Texas flag was adopted in 1993 after the revisions done under the state statutes. The Texas flag as it is today, was adopted on the 24th of January 1839 as the national flag of the Texan Republic. The Texas flag is known also by the name of the Lone Star Flag. Though the designer of this flag is unknown, at least we have information as to when it was proposed for the first time.
