Space Invaders Sweet Treats

Who doesn't remember Space Invaders? A classic game that was enjoyed by many people growing up in the 80s these edible Space Invaders treats are ideal for retro parties or just for a bit of fun. Space Invaders cheesecake squares are a treat that will be a huge hit at any get-together. Space Invaders cakes and cookies are awesome for parties, I would've loved a Space Invaders cake for my 40th, but I'll settle for one for 41st instead :)

If you know anyone who loves retro video games then this is the page you need to read in order to give them some delicious Space Invader's treats. If they preferred Pac Man then that's okay I've got them covered at Pac Man Baking!

Space Invaders Cheesecake Squares

These are taken from an idea that is really popular at a friend's get-togethers, although hers aren't based on space invaders. There are two ways of making them, the cheat's version which is the one I choose or the make completely from scratch version.

Space Invaders Cheesecake - Cheat's Version

You Will Need

  • A square slab of cheesecake (I usually buy the Sara Lee original)

  • Jelly (I use lime flavor with the Sara Lee original, but use whatever flavor you prefer)

  • Water

  • Space Invaders mold

Space Invaders Ice Mold

Space Invaders Ice Mold

After making the Space Invaders Cheesecake Squares, you can use these Space Invaders molds to make ice to add to your drinks and carry the theme on throughout your get-together.

Space Invaders Cheesecake - Cheat's Version

Directions

  • Dissolve the jelly squares/crystals with the water as directed on the packet and pour into the Space Invaders molds.

  • Once Jelly has set push them out and place onto the cheesecake.

  • Cut the Cheesecake into squares that encompass one piece of jelly on each square.

  • Serve and wait for the plate to be thoroughly demolished!

Make from Scratch

Now I haven't made a cheesecake from scratch for years.....but I know people who have - check out these links -

Best No Bake Cheesecake
Another amazing recipe from allrecipes.com is this one for a no bake cheesecake....
Vanilla Cheesecake Recipe
The nobakecheesecakerecipe.com site has a number of different and delicious cheesecake recipes to choose from including this vanilla cheesecake recipe....
Good Food Channel's Orkney Fudge Cheesecake
This is a lovely cheesecake recipe, although I would probably forgo the fudge if you're making the Space Invaders cheesecake - up to you of course :)

Note

These are the cheesecakes that set, not the baked cheesecakes - they might work, but I've never tried them this way. After making the cheesecake do not add the toppings instead refer to the instructions above and remember you need to make them in a square pan not a round one.

Space Invaders Cakes

You can make a Space Invaders slab cake or have cupcakes and they're both as delicious as each other. Using fondant icing to decorate means that you can use whatever flavor cake you want, so basically just use your own cake recipe.

I've got a reputation as making awesome cakes for my daughter's birthday. These are the ones we take into school so I'm very conscious that they've got to be edible.....I buy ready made sponges and decorate them! The moms, teacher and most importantly the children think that I'm brilliant!! Why am I telling you this? So that you don't worry if you're not a great baker, just get an un-iced sponge and decorate it yourself.

As a side note, last year dd wanted cupcakes so I had to actually do some baking and I actually still did a good job and enjoyed it so I might start making all of the cakes from scratch, but back to Space Invaders -

If you're very artistic with a piping bag you could use ice the cake and then pipe the design on top. I'm not sure I could replicate all of the space invaders so that they all looked the same using this method so I prefer to use fondant.
Fondant is a really fun way of decorating cakes, but if you're not convinced that you could cut out your fondant without a pattern then all is not lost because I've found some free patterns for you to download.
Crafthead Space Invaders Pattern
This pattern was originally designed for cross-stitch, but can be adapted for fondant.....it would also be a great reference if you decide to try and make the pixelated cookies below.
Crafzine Space Invaders Pattern
Another cross-stitch pattern, this one includes a quote, but you can just make the actual invaders larger and use them.
Space Invaders Pattern
This is actually a pattern for making a Space Invaders tote bag, but it's my favorite for making fondant space invaders because of the Space Invader template it has.
Space Invaders Ice Cube MoldsAnother way of decorating a space invaders cake is by using chocolate (always a good idea in my book!). Melting white chocolate you can use these ice molds as chocolate molds and make your own 3d space invaders to pop on top of the cake. You can use white chocolate and also add food coloring for the red space invaders.

I just love how versatile these molds are - ice, jellies, chocolates if you love the 80s then these are invaluable for 80s parties and other get-togethers. In fact one mold might not be enough, better buy two :)

Have You Ever Made Space Invaders Food?

I have been told that you can purchase space invaders shaped candy, but I haven't found it anywhere. If you've ever made any space invaders food, whether it's cakes, cookies or just about anything I'd love to hear about it.

I just love the fact that you can now purchase a Space Invaders Ice Mold and I think it's going to lead to a lot of fun in our house once it arrives :)
