Space Invaders
As far as arcade games go Space Invaders must be one of my favorites, although it was released in 1978 I always think of it as an 80s game. Released in Japan in 1978, its success was due partly to what was an error in the writing of the code used to run the game.

Die Aliens Die!
If you haven't played Space Invaders before (never admit this - it is shameful!) then I will explain it to you. Basically you are the Earth's sole defence, you have one lone laser shooter and you have to shoot down all of the aliens before they land. If the aliens make it to the bottom of the screen then you have lost.It's a funny thing about these aliens they march in perfect order across the screen, as they are shot and get lower down the screen they turn from slow march into a quickstep and they keep getting faster. This speeding alien really added something to the game, the number of times that I would get down to one alien and have him speed across the screen eluding my lasers...........It's funny that this climatic part of the game was caused by a mistake in writing the code, without it the game would have been IMHO quite boring!
The aliens also had firing ability and would shoot at you, as they went faster across the screen their bullets would seem to be coming down on a diagonal and felt almost impossible to evade.
Space Invaders really opened up the arcade games from a time of pinball to a plethora of different alien games which then rolled out the shooting games we see today. Space Invaders were at the forefront of the arcade game industry and that is why they did and always will rule!

- If it were not for Space Invaders, we would not have had Galaxians and Galaga. I preferred to play Asteroids, but Space Invaders was just as fun. Defender was great too.
