History of the Space Shuttle Enterprise

The Space Shuttle Enterprise got its name because of a massive write-in campaign by fans of Star Trek, who wanted it to be the namesake of the most famous fictional starship ever. The Space Shuttle Enterprise never saw orbital space flight as it was originally built to do. The Enterprise has been used in several tests over the years, finally retiring to the Smithsonian Museum in 1985.

it is really sad what happened to the Enterprise. Anyhow, with the end of the shuttle missions, it wont matter much anymore as all space shuttles have been suspended.

As a Trekkie, I always felt a little cheated that the Enterprise wasn't space-worthy. I console myself with the fact that it's going to survive as a museum piece in better shape than the remaining three.

There's some Star Trek novel which takes place on the 200th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. They bring the old Enterprise space shuttle out of a museum, retrofit it with impulse engines, and have it fly as the flagship leading the parade from Earth to the Moon and back. So it finally gets to fly, at least in our imaginations. :)

Ditto. I think I remember that Star Trek novel. I'll have to dig it out sometime. I'm just sorry that they're planning to end the shuttle program.

I've always been impressed that they named the first one Enterprise. I'm a Star Trek fan. This lens has been blessed by a Squid Angel.
