And You Thought Ultraman Was Campy...

goldar
Before anime went mainstream, before Power Rangers and Transformers, even before Robotech and Speed Racer, there was... THE SPACE GIANTS!

Few adults would admit to liking this awful, awful television show when they were children. Yet there is something quite magnificent about grade D (if not F) Japanese science fiction.

The show first aired in 1966 just six days before Ultraman took the airwaves by storm.

I've told my friends that THE SPACE GIANTS, aka Space Avengers or Ambassador Magma, was even worse than Ultraman. Nonetheless, when I was seven, I thought it was the greatest show on the planet.

Judge for yourselves. Below is an official trailer for this vintage TV show:

Golly gee, wasn't that amazing cinematography?

Now let's introduce our heroes.

goldar: Space Giants Goldar, a fifty-foot robot, saves the world (that is, Japan) from monsters in rubber suits. He gives pompous, stilted speeches that are even more lethal than the missiles he shoots out of his chest.

Silvar, Giants from SpaceSilvar, his wife, is a human-sized robot in a silver lamée tutu who usually has to call Goldar to help her finish off monsters in rubber suits.

methusan, Space Giants Methusan, the token Old Wise Man (you can tell by the paste-on beard), lives with them in the bottom of a volcano named Olympian. He is the brains of this operation.

Gam, son of Goldar, Giants from Space Gam, a robot boy modelled on their human friend Miko, was created by Methusan to be the son of Goldar and Silvar. A likely story. In fact, Goldar is dumb as rocks, and has not realized that his wife cheated on him with Methusan. (Or so we hope, since the alternative is too horrible to contemplate.)

Goldar, Silvar and Gam as Rockets, The Space GiantsAccompanied by an insanely cheerful soundtrack -- especially appropriate when parts of Tokyo are being crushed by a monster in a rubber suit -- all three members of the robot family can turn into rockets. This is the earliest example of transforming robots in Japanese TV. Since Miko (see below) often rides in Gam's cockpit, one can consider them forerunners of Mechs as well.

FriendsTomoko, Miko, Monster From Space

Miko Mura is the plucky Japanese boy on whom Gam is modelled. Goldar gives Miko a magic whistle with which to summon the robot family whenever Japan is attacked by monsters in rubber suits.

Ito Mura, Monsters From SpaceTomoko Mura, Miko's mom, is the perfect Japanese housewife. She looks worried a lot.

Ito Mura, Miko's dad, is the erstwhile news reporter who's always trying to get the scoop on the latest monster in a rubber suit.

EnemiesRodak, Monster From Space

In addition to the ubiquitous monsters in rubber suits, Goldar and his friends and family must often face...

Lugo Men, Monster From Space The arch-villain Rodak, who gesticulates menacingly in his black Nerf armor while making evil overlord speeches.
Rodak's Spaceship, The Space Giants
The sinister Lugo Men, who turn into blue glop when shot.

Rodak's high-tech spaceship, which looks like a Batarang on a string.

Clips From Actual Episodes of... THE SPACE GIANTS!

Thanks to dick1222, footage from the first season or so is available on YouTube. Through skilled editing, he's compressed 30-minute episodes down to a few minutes each. The scary thing is, you can't usually tell that anything's missing.

Here are the first nine segments. (Edit: chapters 1 and 2 seem to have vanished, but you haven't missed much except for how "Gam" was created.) For the rest, go to his Video Index.

I hope you've enjoyed this nostalgic glimpse into a great science fiction classic that many of you are too young to remember -- and the rest of us will soon be senile enough to have mercifully forgotten.

Got a comment or remark? Sing out! But remember, Goldar will defend this lens against spam and blatant self-advertising!

As a kid, Space Giants didn't air in my area, so I only got to sample it once or twice. But I remember running home from school every afternoon to watch the awesome one-two punch of JOHNNY SOKKO AND HIS FLYING ROBOT and ULTRAMAN. That was truly the greatest hour of the day.
