Electronic Dance Music

As the name suggests Electronic Dance Music (Abbr: EDM) is any kind of music that has been generated via electronic instruments and generally intended to be heard in a nightclub. The music is created via hardware (analogue/digital/VA/sampler) or Computer based (Digital Audio Workstations and Softsynth plugins) This should not be confused with the similar sounding EBM (Electro Body Music) which is a style in its own right.

The term EDM is used mostly to differentiate the music from the easy listening/chillout styles that began to emerge in the 1990s, styles which are better suited for listening at home rather than dancing. It is a general term which covers a wide variety of styles.

Major styles include, but are not limited to:

House (Chicago House, Acid House, Deep House, Electro House, Microhouse, Progressive House)

Techno (Detroit Techno, Dub Techno, Minimal Techno, Shranz)

Trance (Goa, Psytrance, Anthem Trance)

Breakbeat (Chemical Breaks)

Electro (includes both the 1980s oldskool style and newer strains)

Drum and Bass/Jungle (Jump Up, Techstep, Neurofunk, Ragga Jungle, Atmopsheric Jungle)

UK Garage, 2-Step, Grime

Dubstep

Hardcore (Old Skool, Happy Hardcore)
