Talking Day Spas, beauty treatment reviews, tips, and home spa recipes
Day spas have become such an important part of the American landscape that it's hard to believe most have been around for only a short time. Growth has been phenomenal, burgeoning from a handful in the 1970s to more than 1,000 today. In salons, attached to health clubs, in shopping centers, at hotels, or standing alone, day spas have reinvented--and continue to reinvent--the way we take care of ourselves.
As the industry moves onward, however, devotees and spa newcomers are faced with sometimes bewildering choices. Many day spas specialize in pampering and beauty. At wellness spas, the primary focus is on regaining or maintaining balance--mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual--by using popular spa treatments like massage and aromatherapy, coupled with acupuncture, chiropractic, and other more medically oriented treatments. Some are more clinical, focusing on preventive care and the treatment of existing conditions. Still others are serene retreats from the pressures and stresses of the modern world.

Convenience is one of the reasons why salon day spas are growing so quickly in popularity. "My clients are time paupers," . "They're stretched thin from the demands of work and travel and family, and they want convenience on top of quality services." The answer is crossover. "If you need a scalp treatment, it's logical to get a facial at the same time. If you need to go back to work after a massage, we'll offer you a complimentary light makeup application, so you won't look like you've just been shot out of a cannon."
To accommodate his clients, Broderick offers professional day care--and Evenings of Beauty, instead of the traditional "day" package. "This way, women can arrive after work and leave at 10 p.m., feeling wonderful, and then get a long, deep sleep."
Other salon spas have different offerings, designed to cater to their clientele's specific needs and interests. For example, The Hair Studio in Houston appeals to its clientele by featuring an original art collection, espresso bar, European spa pedicure chairs, and a makeup center, where artists use products from more than a dozen global cosmetics companies.

The focus is on a holistic approach to health, using traditional and alternative treatments provided by board-certified medical specialists. Run by Dr. Phyllis, associate professor of neurology at Northwestern University Medical School, the wellness center specializes in sleep disorder evaluations, dermatology, gynecology, psychiatry, plastic and reconstructive surgery, nutrition, acupuncture, and Chinese herbal medicine. "The philosophy behind the Tiffani Kim Institute," says Spa Director Julie, "is to offer a place for people to nurture themselves, not just by taking care of skin and hair, but by becoming fundamentally strong and healthy."
For many, a round of detoxification is in order, involving various topical treatments that incorporate mud or herbs, as well as colon therapy, lymphatic drainage, and massage. "Our goal is to help the body naturally repair itself without medication."
