A summary on the Spanish film industry with key dates and people

Since the release of Pan's Labyrinth and the Orphanage the rest of the world has sat up and taken notice of Spanish cinema and what it has to offer. Spanish films cover not just the European peninsula of Spain but also much of Latin America which has been the source of many great classic Spanish language movies.

Some of the great directors and writers include Del Torro, Pedro Almodovar, Alfonso Cuaron and Fernando Meirelles.

  • Alfonso Cuaron - A prolific director who has been responsible for numerous Spanisha nd international films. His most famous Spanish language film was set in Mexico and was called Y tú Mama Tambien.

  • Pedro Almodovar - One of the most famous Spanish directors, born in Madrid. He hit the big time internationally when he released the film "All About My Mother". Well worth a viewing.

  • Guillermo del Toro - Quite possibly the most famous of the Spanish-language directors as he's directed numerous Hollywood epics as well as Latin films. He's the man behind Pan's Labyrinth which is a fantastic film!

  • Manuel Huerga - Director of the great Salvador film chronicalling the execution of a young revolutionary during Spains Franco regime in 1974.
