Why And How to Learn Spanish
Some facts and ideas about the 4th most spoken language in the world.
Yes, why learn the Spanish language? The total global number of native and non-native Spanish speakers is around 500 million. This makes it the fourth most spoken language in terms of total number of speakers. Imagine feeling more comfortable and confident around Spanish speaking people, being able to read Spanish materials from, say, Mexico, and being able to write and email Spanish speaking friends (consider too, how many friends and contacts you stand to gain if you learn this language). But if you have already been convinced long ago that it's "Learn Spanish now or suffer later," then what options have you considered how to achieve your goal? Moving to Spain or Mexico, hiring a tutor (face to face meetings), buying a self-help book, taking classes, learning Spanish language online... After just a short time, you will start using some Spanish words frequently, which will stretch into phrases and eventually sentences. The longer you stay submerged, the better your vocabulary and grammar will become. Of course, don't neglect doing your reading and writing.
Indeed, immersion must be one the best ways to learn, with grammar practice and dictionaries on the side. On second thought also, why go to Spain or Mexico, when you can still learn and get immersion by working for some establishment with a lot of Spanish-speaking employees? These people, who in turn are anxious to absorb English, are sometimes eager to practice Spanish with others. You may end up learning at a faster rate than any twice-a-week formal Spanish class can provide, because you go through real life situations. A great tip for those who cannot do the above is to memorize a group of small words and use them in everyday conversation, progressing on to more and more words until your vocabulary expands.
It's a whole new deal, however, on the Internet. There, people have the option of having internet Spanish lessons on real time or asynchronous, audio or video or with both, and if it's a good package, may include the assistance of a teacher to double check your progress. Hi! I personally recommend the immersion method by living in Mexico, but i know that's not attractive for everybody. Vacationing in Mexico gives you a good boost in your Spanish skills too! Anyway, thanks for visiting my lens on "El Rancho" in Mazatlan, and if anybody wants to relax and practice Spanish there, you're more than welcome! Posted July 02, 2008 |
