First off, MacSpeech Dictate is powered by the Dragon Naturally Speaking voice recognition engine. For those who don't know, this was probably the most powerful and accurate engine on the Windows platform and so it's not really a surprise that it works very well at many things on the Mac.

And does MacSpeech get voice recognition right? In my opinion - Absolutely!

No Correction Feature

One of Dictate's main limitation when it first came out was that it didn't contain a corrections engine (like Dragon NaturallySpeaking does). Now, this "Correction feature" basically lets you tell Dictate when it got a word wrong, so then you could correct it with the word you intended. This gives your speech to text software the ability to "learn" from it's mistakes and significantly improves the accuracy of your voice profile over time. A HUGELY important feature for a good speech to text program.

Secondly, the other limitation it had was that it had no Spelling mode. This meant that if you felt that it was easier to spell a word such as Stanlislawski instead of trying to pronounce it (hoping that the software would guess the spelling right) - you were out of luck.

Well now, things have changed with BOTH of these features now included in the latest update.

Do You Write a Lot?

A speech to text program such as MacSpeech is perfect if you write a lot. Or you work from home. For example, I run a few blogs which I update daily. Creating content quickly is important to me and this allows put thoughts on paper fast. I can be more productive and get more done. Even if a few mistakes you can edit it later or use the Spelling Mode to spell out things you think the software might not get right.

Disabled People

I think it's going to be a big help for disabled people using the Macintosh who may rely solely on speech for controlling their computers and getting work done. Using "Command Mode" they can control their Mac with voice commands.

How Does It Work?

It's simple. Instead of typing, use your voice to input text; rather than clicking your mouse, just speak commands. MacSpeech makes everything easy. It uses your words and your speech and translates them into text.

Voice Recognition Training

All voice recognition software require a bit of "training" in order for the speech to text conversion to be optimal. Getting Used To It...

At the start, it will take some time getting used to having to say "PERIOD" to end a sentence or add another punctuation mark. However, you will pick it up very quickly.

When the program misinterprets something you have said, you can say "SCRATCH THAT" It will delete it and often if you try a few more times, it "guesses" right. Truly, it learns as it "gets to know" your voice.

The software could've been even better with a high-quality USB headset.

You may want to try a different mic as the difference in accuracy between the microphone unit that comes in the box and my Swiss-made Logitech USB headset is pretty significant. The mic that comes with MacSpeech isn't that bad, but a USB mic seems almost psychic. Without doubt you can achieve 99% accuracy with a USB microphone.
