Here is a little bit about me:

As a speed reader with over 15 years experience and a reading capacity of up to 600 words per minute I understand the huge advantages speed reading gives a person throughout their professional life.

Speed Reading has been a massive part of my life and in 2005 I started teaching speed reading to students across Australia with great success. With over 3000 speed reading students many have taken the time to ask me their opinions on the different software now available to improve reading speeds. So as a teaching professional I thought I'd lend my educated opinion and review the 4 best software options available in the speed reading market.

I know these 4 reviews will help you make a smart choice when buying software to improve your reading speed & to make sure you purchase the best speed reading software available.

Warm Regards,

7 Speed Reading

1st Place

speedreadingsoftwareAfter using 7 Speed Readingfor the last 3 months I quite frankly found this software extremely well made. After learning several speed reading techniques myself over the past 15 years 7 Speed Reading Software has managed to pull them all together into one very attractive piece of software. 7 Speed Reading has recognized that everyone has a different way of educating themselves so they made the program with 7 very different techniques to improve reading speeds. The software itself is extremely well made and easy to use and has unbelievable depth e.g. you won't just use this software once with a whopping 15 software activities you will want to go back and improve your speed reading again and again just because those activities are so damn fun. There are video tutorials throughout and you can track your progress as you learn to read faster and faster. The software ran perfectly when I tested it on windows xp and windows 7.

This program is the Best piece of software in the Speed Reading market leaving the other software programs looking a quite dated.

My rating on this software is 10/10, speed reading software really doesn't get any better than this, I would give it an 11/10 if I could as this one is a real keeper!

The Reader's Edge Review

2nd Place

Here is another nice piece of software. One complaint I did have with the readers edge speed reading is I found this software a little hard to use at first and quite frustrating. Once you get the hang of it has though it has quite a lot to offer with its 6 helpful Speed Reading Techniques. It's modern looking and the software performs well on Window XP, Vista and Windows 7.

It does not have the video tutorials like 7 Speed Reading but all in all a very good program and will be helpful with improving your reading speed but obviously not my favourite piece of software but it does come in second place.

Rating: 8/10

Rocket Reader Review

3rd Place

Rocket Reader is not the best speed reading software it's just not in the same league as the other two franky, but it does have something to offer. I found the software quite easy to use if only a little out-dated in its appearance. The depth of the course does not reach the depth of the above to mentioned programs which is unfortunate. Another downside is the price; at $129.00 it's quite a lot more than some of the superior Speed Reading Software programs available. But still if you are thinking about a product this is worthy enough. It does use some well-known speed reading techniques and if you can look past the dated look of the software I have no doubt this program can increase your reading speed.

Rating: 6/10.

EyeQ Advantage Review

4th Place

eyeQ advantageThis is a program many people know about quite simply because it has been advertised on TV. Unfortunately this program doesn't live up to its hype and basis a lot of it's perceived value on gimmicky books incorporated in the program you can look up for free online. It calls itself everything from revolutionary to amazing but once again it falls flat. I don't want to say this program is bad because it isn't and it does offer most of what the other programs do and has a better interface than Rocket Reader but isn't even comparable to 7 Speed Reading or The Readers Edge for sheer functionality and ease of use. Unfortunately there is nothing revolutionary about this program apart from the fact it's appeared infomercials on TV.

At a price of $250.00 I found this program had little more to offer than any of the others.

I'd rate this higher than Rocket Reader if they lowered their price but for the value for money I can only give this product 6/10.

For what I generally recommend as the best speed reading software I have used, 7 Speed Reading, click here!

Speed Reading Technique 1

Meta-Guiding

Probably the easiest way to learn to speed read is Meta-Guiding. With this techniques you use trace your words with either your hand a pen or even a ruler. You force your pen across the page at a faster pace than your current reading speed. While doing this you must avoid regression however at the same time test your comprehension. With practice your eyes will begin get used to this pace without the use of a pen or ruler and your comprehension will start to improve.

Speed Reading Technique 2

Avoid Subvocalization

As children learning to read we were taught to speak our words or sound them out. When first learning to read this a naturally a very helpful method. However for the purpose of speed reading this method will need to be eliminated. Sounding out words actually slows down your reading speed.

That fact is your eyes and brain can read at a pace much faster than your lips can move. So eliminating subvolcalization by concentrating on either closing your mouth, e.g. clenching your jaw or even chewing gum you can dramatically increase your reading speed. If you practice this over time you will naturally unlearn sounding words out and it will become habit to just let your eyes and brain do the reading, not your mouth.

Speed Reading Technique 3

Building Your Vocabulary

Have you ever started reading a book or article and become stuck on a word? Or perhaps several words? Sometimes you can figure out the meaning of the word through the context of the article but other times you may have to look the word up to find its true meaning. Whatever the case this slows your reading speed down.

By building a better vocabulary you will not only increase your reading speed it will also give you knew words to help you express yourself to others.

One of the ways I increased my vocabulary was reading poetry, I found this way to be the most fun. Some poetry is uniquely expressive in its wording and most poets have an extremely good vocabulary to enhance or give flow to their poems. By reading complex poetry and literally looking up their meanings writing the words down you will find your vocabulary will increase dramatically. You will also notice how those words next time you come across them and see how you just breeze through reading the text.

Speed Reading Technique 4

Structure

Now this is almost a trick. However all most all written content follows the same structure. That is beginning, middle, and end. Though this method is not suitable for people studying for exams or people that want to enjoy a great book, it is a great cheat for those who just want to skim through a quick article.

By reading the beginning of an article or book the writer will give away the subject, main characters and the direction the article is going to go. By then skipping to the end of the article or book you will generally read the final adaption of just what happened in that story. This gives you the basic conclusion to the book, story, article or whatever you reading. This will naturally save you a lot of time and perhaps energy you may want to spend doing other activities.
