Created And Produced By Tatsuo Yoshida, 1967-68, Distributed Worldwide Through TransLux.

Speed Racer is the story of  an 18 year old racing driver and his adventures on and off the track. On his helmet is printed M, which stands for "Go Mifune", his original Japanese name.

Main Characters:

Speed's girlfriend, Trixie

His mother, Mom Racer

His younger brother, Spritle

Spritle's pet monkey, Chim Chim.

Speed's mechanic and best friend, Sparky.

Speed's older brother, Rex, AKA Racer X - a masked racer, whom no one, not even Speed, knows his real identity. He is an undercover agent, and left home years ago. None of his family has seen him since...or so they think!

Speed's car is known as the Mach 5. It was designed and built by his father "Pops" Racer,  and is equipped with incredible features, operated by 7 buttons on the steering wheel.

A - jet propulsion and car elevation
B - special tires for rough terrain
C - sawblades at the front of the car for cutting through anything.
D - bullet proof windshield
E - super bright headlights
F - for driving underwater, equipped with an oxygen supply and periscope
G - robot bird released as a messenger pigeon

Speed Racer was titled 'Mach Go Go' in Japan. 52 episodes were made. Peter Fernandez (other work includes The Space Giants, Ultraman, and Star Blazers-aka Space Battleship Yamoto as well as most of the Godzilla films) coordinated the English version and was the voice of Speed Racer and Racer X. Corinne Orr (female) was the voice of Trixie, Mom Racer and Spritle. Jack Curtis was Pops Racer and Inspector Detector, and Jack Grimes was the voice of Sparky and Chim-Chim.

I enjoyed this cartoon throughout my childhood and now I am cool with my kids, because they love Manga and this was the original Manga cartoon. So enjoy the lens, check out the links and info, and cheer on Speed and the gang!
