Who is Spell Outloud?
This little lens is all about me, Maureen Spell. I know I'm pretty new here and don't have too many lenses under my belt yet, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to introduce myself. :)
Spell Outloud is the name of my blog. No, my blog isn't about spelling, and we don't spell outloud --- well not very often. My husband came up with the idea. It's a play on our last name. Since I couldn't think of anything better, I took the name and ran with it.
I blog about homeschooling, digital scrapbooking, and family life. Most of my future lenses will probably fall into those categories as well.

Why Squidoo?
So how did I get started on Squidoo? Well there is a wonderful person named Jimmie who posts here. I started seeing her on multiple homeschool boards and noticed that she was sharing some awesome homeschooling tools and information. Following her links I found her on Squidoo. At first Squidoo just seemed too confusing and overwhelming to me that I didn't come back for 9 months. Then one day I had an article idea. And I thought of Jimmie and her articles on Squidoo and came back to check things out. For some reason this time it clicked. I wrote my first lens and the rest is history. (Too bad I didn't know about the referral feature because Jimmie totally deserves $5) :)
Growing Up
I grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago. My childhood home was the same house my mother grew up in, which is pictured in the layout to the left. I loved being on the fringe of the Windy City. We were close enough to be able to spend time at Lake Michigan, enjoy the museums and cheer on our favorite baseball team (the White Sox of course!) When I was around 15 years old, we ended up selling the house and moving, but I have many great memories from that neighborhood. The friends I grew up with and the experiences I had there helped make me who I am today.

My Family
I met my husband while I was student teaching out west. He was a 4th grade teacher in the next portable classroom next to mine. We've been married now for over a decade and have 6 curious kiddos to keep us on our toes and keep us young. I am fortunate that I am able to stay at home with my children and teach them. Homeschooling has become a life-style for us. Teaching
One thing that I love to do is teach. I think it is in my blood. A standing joke on my mom's side of the family is that you are either going to be a teacher or an accountant. I know numbers are not my strong suit, but I have a passion for teaching. I've taught Sunday school, elementary school, homeschool and scrapbooking classes. I just love to see people experience and learn new things. It energizes me to create printables, units or crafts that help teach a concept or make things easier for other teachers. And it makes me happy to share what I make, learned or researched with others.
My Hobby
One of my biggest addictions is scrapbooking. I still remember the day I created my first layout. About a month earlier I had heard a radio program mention something called Creative Memories. I had never heard of them before. I called the number to see if there was a consultant in my little out-of-the-way town (which I was new to and very lonely). I was shocked when I found out there was a consultant! I called and had a couple friends come over and made my first layout. I was hooked. And I found a great group of scrapping friends in my new townAfter a couple of years I discovered the online scrapbooking world. I was intrigued when I heard that you could actually submit your layouts to magazines. I decided to try and was thrilled when Memory Makers magazine
published one of my layouts. That began a new stage for me as I started to branch out in my scrapping style. One day I decided to enter PaperKuts magazine's Power Team contest. The winners would get to work with the magazine for a year. It was hard work putting together an entry, and so many amazing scrappers were entering. On the day of the big announcement, I tried to keep myself busy. Then the phone rang. I was shocked when I heard it was the editor saying that I had won. What a honor! I ended up working with the magazine for an additional year as a contributing editor. During that time I also traveled to several scrapbook conventions teaching classes and doing demonstrations. I loved it! And hated it at the same time. I found it hard to balance my family life and my scrapbooking life. After a few discouraging events, I realized I was burned out. Scrapping was no longer fun for me, so I stopped. I didn't care if I ever scrapped again.

Something I Never Thought I'd Do...
I was done with scrapbooking. I went ahead and donated tons of my scrapbooking stuff. I got rid of boxes of paper, (yes, I really had that much) tools, embellishments and other odds and ends. I kept a small stash just in case I felt the need to scrap, but I wasn't planning on it. I didn't scrap for over 9 months. In that time period I made a cross-country move and was settling in when I was invited to a crop. I dug out an unfinished layout and went. While there I noticed a lady sitting at a table with a computer. She was one of those weird digital scrapbookers. When I introduced myself, she immediately recognized me from the internet. We had once worked together on a scrapbooking e-book. What a small world! Well I was curious and she invited me over to show me how she scrapped on the computer. I had always said that you would never get me to switch to digital because I just loved paper so much. Boy did I ever eat those words! After switching, it was refreshing to scrapbook again. I didn't realize how much I missed it---missed the creativity and the scrapping friendships. I now was a digital scrapbooker.(All the layouts featured in this lens are digital layouts)
My Digital Scrapbooking Lenses
Photography
I became interested in improving my photography once I started scrapbooking. Then when I received my first SLR camera, I became serious about learning all I could about photography. I used so much film each week that my local store would see me coming and have my developed film sitting on the counter for me! :)I now shoot with a digital Canon Rebel XT. I once thought I'd have my own photography business, but I've shelved that idea for the time-being. I have too much to learn and not enough time. I just want to enjoy photography as a hobby without the pressure of a business. I do however, welcome free-lance work, and hope to one day find time to open an online store for my photo art.
Holiday Lenses
I'll admit that it stretches me to plan holiday events. I have done better over the past couple of years, and have been working on intentionally planning and creating holiday traditions for my family. I want my kids to have good memories of the holidays. Through the years I have come to the conclusion that traditions aren't set in stone. Sometimes they change as the children enter new phases. Sometimes a tradition just doesn't work anymore and it's ok to drop it. My goal is to create times where we can have fun together as a family. When my children talk about their childhood my hope is that the tradition will spark a flood of good memories from their youth.
My Faith
Just the Beginning
(more to come!)
So this is the beginning of my Squidoo scrapbook. I hope readers will find my lenses useful. I'm working toward the title of Giant Squid and am also participating in Rocket Moms. Eventually I'd love to be part of the Giant Squid 100 club. Only 76 more lenses to go! :)*All my layouts were created using digital products from Designer Digitals.

- Hope to get our daughter involved with this with her now 3 week old son, later, of course.
Also hope she'll be able to stay home to homeschool. Big leap for Dad!
