I believe that spells work by focusing our subconscious mind. This is the same reason meditation works, affirmations work, positive thinking works, and prayer works. I truly believe we have unlimited power to change the world around us, to create and to destroy, to draw good events and people to us, or bad events and people.

There is a spark of the power of life in everyone of us. Call it the soul, the God Force, the Goddess. Scientists cannot quantify it. Medical doctors cannot call it back once it has left this earthly body. It is what makes us what we are, it makes us alive.

All "things", people, rocks, storms, have a spark of this power, and this is why we can affect them and they affect us. We are all one. Some of us are in closer contact with that spark and wield it more effectively. We can all learn to use it.

Because we are so powerful, it is our responsibility to take care with that power. Never cast a spell, no matter how good it may be, for or on another person unless they have asked you to do it for them, or if you have gotten their permission to do it for them.

Before casting any sort of negative spell, such as binding or banishing, think about what you are doing very carefully. Why are you doing it? And how can you phrase it so that it is for the good of all.

I had to do a banishment of a neighbor once. She was threatening me in a very real way with real harm. I conceived the belief that she was so negative because she was not happy where she was. In my spell work I focused on her leaving and going to a place where she was much happier.

Through mutual friends I learned some months later that she left (and she did leave) because she had a new boyfriend, and he took her to live in a place in the country. She liked it much better, and was very happy there!

And she was out of my space and no longer causing me problems!

Always be careful what you ask for - for you may receive it.

An acquaintance did a spell to lower her debts. Shortly after things happened that caused her to lose her home and her car and other things she was making payments on. She was out of debt, alright, but certainly not better off!

Given that, why do we need props such as candles, cloth, symbols, etc.

In the case of candles, a flame is provides an excellent focus for the mind. Every time you see or relight the candle, your subconscious brings forward the wish, spell, or blessing you created with that candle.

Colors create a double reminder. Colors create a vibration - a wavelength - of light that reacts with our mind to create certain feelings, or moods. They contribute their own vibration, their own life, if you will, to the spell, as well as communicating directly with the subconscious mind.

Stones, gems and minerals also have their own vibrations, their own life, They help by tuning our mind, our focus, to their own vibration that corresponds with certain powers.

Herbs and flowers, also have their own life. They affect us on several levels - as a symbol (such as the rose as a symbol of love), with color, and with their scent (honeysuckle as a symbol of summer and thus abundance and warmth. In addition, as something that was or is a living thing, they contribute their own vibrations, as well as focusing the mind on the thing, feeling, vibration that they symbolize.

Incense works in a similar way to both the herbs and candles - the smoke can work as a focus just as a candle flame does.

As you study and work with your beliefs and with spells, you will learn the meanings of other symbols such as the wand, athame, cauldron, tarot cards, and so on. Some of them will come to have particular meanings to you as an individual.

Chants and spoken word have power in themselves. In particular a chant is easily remembered and becomes a part of your subconscious. Don't believe me? How did you learn your alphabet? If you are looking for something filed in alphabetical order, doesn't your brain STILL bring that little song forward to locate that letter for you? Without you consciously willing it - your mind will sing it to you over and over. Instead let your mind tell you over and over that money comes to you, that your life is blessed and you are safe.

Certain words will be power words to you. You know what they are. Use them in your spell work. They will connect to your unconscious mind and bring it into the spell.

Many people are drawn to natural things such as a silken ritual robe, or a feather as a symbol of freedom. If you find yourself drawn to something then use it. It will become a powerful tool for you.

Spells work by focusing your mind. The symbols and tools, or props, used in spell work assist you to reach and focus your subconscious mind.
