Introducing Spelman College
Spelman is a private, independent, liberal arts, historically Black college for women, founded in 1881.
It's goals include integrating and globalizing learning, teaching creatively and rigorously, leading from it's authentic core, living sustainably,
improving itself continuously, and collaborating to better Atlanta's quality of life. These ambitious goals and others build on it's accomplishments as the premier historically Black college for women and one of the finest institutions for undergraduate education nationwide.
Spelman College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate degrees.
Spelman College is also an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the National Association for College Admissions Counseling.
Spelman is part of the largest consortium of historically Black institutions of higher learning in the world.
It's four partner institutions include Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College and Morehouse School of Medicine. Spelman shares cross-registration with its undergraduate partners. They also share the Robert W. Woodruff Library.
Spelman boasts a historic campus of 39 acres, dating back to 1883, and sits five minutes west of downtown Atlanta. There are 25 buildings, including Sisters Chapel, Giles Hall, Packard Hall, Rockefeller Hall and Reynolds Cottage. The Camille O. Hanks Cosby Academic Center was dedicated in 1996, and a new state-of-the-art Science Center houses classrooms and labs.
The student body consists of more than 2,100 students from 41 states and 15 foreign countries. In addition, Eighty percent of full-time faculty hold Ph.Ds or other terminal degrees. Student-faculty ratio is 12:1.

- The Spelman College music department is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. The department has an active chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society. Spelman College is only the third college in Georgia, and the first historically Black college or university, to join a prestigious group of institutions designated as All-Steinway Schools.
