Support Locally Owned Businesses

Why should we shop at locally owned businesses when it is so easy to head to Wal-mart, Target or Home Depot?
It is good for the local economy, it gives the community a flavorful identity, and they pay more taxes. There are a lot of other reasons to spend your money locally and I will cover them in this lens.

Why Bother?

Supporting local businesses with your money keeps the money in the community.

Local businesses are more likely to buy supplies from local businesses.

Local businesses often pay more tax than giant corporations. Giant corporations are often given local tax breaks as incentive to move to a location.

Local businesses are more likely to treat their employees better.

They have ties to the community and are probably in local civic associations that promote the area and help with charity.

Walmart does not pay its' employees enough for a family to live on. Walmart employees are more likely to have to rely on foodstamps and free school lunches, which cost tax dollars.

Shopping locally is green. Local products do not have to be shipped long distances to get to your stores. This saves fuel.

If you shop locally you can get to know your local business owners.

I'm sure there are many other reasons to shop locally. If you know of any, add them to the list below. Thanks for reading!

We do try to shop locally as much as possible. It's hard where we live too because the cost of living is astronomical in many areas.

Very good points here. I try to avoid going to Wal-Mart for everything because I know it's put so many small shops out of business, but I do shop there sometimes because the prices are low.

I like the idea of buying locally but I'm very practical and usually buy from where it's easiest and cheapest. Great advice here.

I definitely prefer to shop locally if I can get what I need and want. Sometimes that doesn't work out, in which case I'll usually buy online.

I think it is most important to support our local businesses and sure appreciate this lens. I have one on shopping locally too. The small independent businesses need our support because that support filters out in so many directions.
