Nature's Delicate Masterpieces

I've always been awestruck by intricate spider webs. So strong, yet so delicate. So simple, yet so complex.

How Do They Do It?

A spider web, spiderweb, 'spiders web or cobweb' (from the obsolete word coppe, meaning "spider", Compact Oxford English Dictionary: cobweb sometimes with the connotation of being a dusty, abandoned web) is a device built by a spider out of proteinaceous spider silk extruded from its spinnerets.

Spider webs have existed for at least 140 million years, as witnessed in a rare find of Early Cretaceous amber from Sussex, southern EnglandBrasier et al.'' 2009.

Insects can get trapped in spider webs, providing nutrition to the spider; however, not all spiders build webs to catch prey, and some do not build webs at all.

Amazing what kinds of topics you find covered on Squidoo. Yes, the webs are intricate, beautiful, and fascinating, but I still don't want spiders in my house. The video was interesting and kind of creepy. Now I'm going to jump every time my hair brushes against my arm...Still worth a 5 star rating, though.

Spiders don't deserve the reputation they have. Yes, a few of them are poisonous but they don't go looking for people to bite. They eat insects-lots of them. I think spiderwebs are beautiful.
