Cotton Candy - Spinning Sugar Into Gold

Who doesn't remember their first taste of cotton candy? Remember how it felt sort of crackly, was super sweet, and then just disappeared? Remember how soft and fluffy it looked, like a cloud on a stick?

Everyone's favorite concessions or carnival food, "floss" as it's known in the industry, is one hot selling item with a huge profit margin. No wonder so many non-profit agencies are discovering that food concessions with professional "carnie" equipment make a lot of sense ... and not just cents, but lots of dollars, too.

Cotton Candy, or Floss, is a candy that's formed when finely granulated flavored and colored sugar is quickly heated to a melting point, and then extruded in thousands of tiny sugar threads that are gathered onto a paper cone. Sounds pretty simple, and it is, except that it takes some practice to get the floss to stay on the cone, and also to learn to create a standard size floss on each stick.

If you buy a floss machine, plan on spending some time practicing - you might be well served to provide floss to a non-profit or charity at an event for the exposure and the practice. It would be time and money well spent.

and did I mention it's got a pretty nice profit margin?

Depending on the cost of your supplies and the expense associated with your venue, your profit can vary dramatically. However, just as an example, if you clear one dollar profit on every oz of floss sold, and you can produce & sell 200 ounces in an hour, you're looking at $200 an hour. That's a pretty decent return on investment. Of course, you can't expect to do that right off the bat unless you have a super terrific venue, but if you were already established somewhere and already had mastered the learning curve of both machine operation and of vending regulations, you might get lucky and pay for your machine early in your first season.

Gold Medal Concession Products Are The Gold Standard For Equipment

This Is The Machine I've Picked Out For My Concession Trailer

I've known for a long time that the next big piece of equipment I would buy would be the Gold Medal Mid-Range Flosser.

This machine weighs only 46 lbs, so it's light enough I can move it by myself if I have to. It has a stainless steel cabinet, a spun aluminum bowl, and the whirl grip floss stabilizer. This one will make 200 or more ounces per hour, so it's high enough volume that I can make some serious coin with it. It's also a 9 amp & 120 Volt electrical appliance that is UL and CE listed.

This is the work horse of commercial flossers. It's the perfect size and weight for an average person to pack up and move, and it's powerful enough to produce a decent number of floss puffs per hour to make it worthwhile to set up. Don't be fooled by smaller home versions - if you are going to enter the world of flossing and hope to make any money at all, you absolutely have to get a high quality machine. I did my homework, and this is the best possible choice for a small concessions operation.

This is not the exact model I want, but the basics are the same

and the safety tips are excellent.

This is a video made by a company that rents floss machines - it's rather lengthy, at 10 and 1/2 minutes, but it's a very good explanation of how to make cotton candy using a professional machine.
