DJing Lessons with Videos and Step by Step Instructions

Some resources for those looking to become DJ's.  Equipment reviews, Videos, and instructional material.

A Jumpstart to Becoming a DJ

I would like to start off by stating that: Although I don't consider myself a great DJ, I have read a lot and learned a good bit from my fellow DJ's.

1. The technicalities of DJing are for the most part unimportant. That anybody can learn- Being a good DJ is having the ability to pick good music. Being able to inspire a crowd based on your song selection. If you are able to do that, the rest will come eventually.

2. Buying cheap equipment is a waste of money. You are better off having nothing then having a cheap piece. It will either break when you need it most, or it will hold back your learning potential. Trust me. Save up and get the same equipment that they supply in clubs.

3. When buying turn tables. Only get direct drive decks. The technics 1200 is a DJ staple. (never spend more than $250(used) per deck) For mixers, I know that Rane ttm57sl is one of the best. And as far as cd decks go, I dont have any, but I know the pioneer cdj's are what most DJ's use.

4. Learn how to beatmatch the real way. Its hard, but enough time behind the decks and it will come naturally.

5. djforums.com is a great resource for learning. There are many beginner as well as experienced DJ's there, and all are willing to help out.

6. Play music for others, but choose music by yourself only. You're the DJ, you pick the tracks.

7. People do steal equipment. When at a gig, never leave your stuff alone. It will either get a nice splash of beer, or it will walk out the door while you're taking a leak.

8. Yes, DJ's get a lot of girls. A lot.
(be prepared)

9. A good DJ is one who can spin music from the past 30 years like it was just released yesterday.

10. Don't play the same song twice in one night.

11. Only scratch at a gig if you are actually talented at scratching.

12. Never use a microphone. The best DJs never touch a microphone.

13. Always sign contracts with an agreed upon price before doing gigs. Dont let club promoters / owners take advantage of you.

14. When making a mix tape. It should take at least a couple weeks to get a good final mix. The initial mix can take 45 minutes to do, but should be revised several times and publicized professionally with proper contact info.
