Alpaca is wonderful to spin!
It is very soft and slides thru your fingers, without the grab of wool. You can spin it very fine, and you can also card with wool for a 50/50 blend, which many like as it give the elasticity of wool with the softness of the alpaca. I like 100% alpaca myself. It spoils you with its softness.
I use a drum or hand carder to prepare the fiber.
It does not need to be washed beforehand. The fiber can also be used to stuff pillow, or to felt. Felted handbags, or purses, or other products. Felted alpaca can also be used as quilt batting. Alpacas were fan-blown before sheering, so the fleeces are as clean as possible. They are well shorn, with very few second cuts. Alpaca fiber has a hollow core that gives it great thermal properties. While being warm in cold weather, it can breathe and is comfortable for any season.

Alpaca dyes beautifully. It can be dyed with natural or synthetic dyes.
