Hawk- Bird of Prey as Our Totem

Hawk Medicine is something I am very familiar with. It is not one of my birth animals according to many different traditions, but it is something I know that has been with me all of my life. I came to realize my Hawk Medicine when I was in my late twenties, but did not fully understand it until the early nineties.

So what does all of this mean? Many different cultures believe that each of us carry different spiritual animal medicines. Hawks are messengers from the Divine-They bring us messages in many different forms and it is up to us to acknowledge the message or not. According to Ted Andrews, Hawk Medicine is visionary power and Guardianship. Their cycle of power is Spring and Fall Equinox and the New Moon.

How often do you see Hawks? I know some areas you see them several times a day, every day-does this mean they always have messages? I believe they do in a sense. It may not be a direct message from one your ancestors, but they always have something to teach us.

It is up to us to understand the messages we are given. One of the problems with being an Adult oppose to a child is often we are not able to tap into the "innocence" of believing. As a child we believed without question, but as an adult we question a lot because we try to analyze everything to the fullest.

This lens is about Hawk Medicine as an Animal Totem.

What is Hawk Medicine?

type=textAll of my life I have had this "gift" where I have a strong connection with the spirit world. In this gift I am often given messages to give to people. No, it is not like a conversation going on in my head where I hear voices, it is a spiritual conversation. I know I may have you completely confused but I will try my best to explain this to you. I have mentioned bits and pieces of different stories throughout my writings. But I think the easiest way to explain is to fast forward to some strong confirmation I received.

Grant you, I do a lot of research and always have on everything I have a strong interest in. Often though, I will be sitting and out of nowhere a formula will appear in my mind (I called those experiences, silent conversations from the spirit world) so, I will put this combination of herbs (in this case) together and try them on myself. I have always known about this "gift" but it was really confirmed when a Medicine Man asked me where I came up with my herbal tea combinations. As odd as it may sound I told him the truth and explained it came from the spirit world. My first thought was this man is going to think I am a loony from la-la land. But instead he looked me in the eyes and said, "Very good combinations".

According to Ted Andrews, Hawk Medicine is visionary power and guardianship. He explains that hawks are one of the most intriguing and mystical of the birds of prey. They are messengers, the protectors, and the visionaries of the air. Throughout my years I have given people messages from the spirit world that were and are messages they needed to hear to be able to move forward in their life. One time I was talking to a gentleman that was carrying around a lot of hurt, guilt and other negative emotions and out of nowhere I was lead to talk to him about his grandmother. I kept explaining to him that he needed to go to her; he needed to talk to her and mainly needed to forgive her. I really freaked him at first but this spiritual conversation kept coming into my mind so I continued to relay the messages. Long story short, he finally went to his grandmother who was in the hospital, unconscious and made amends with her. She was able to "cross-over" and he was able to make peace and move forward in his life.

Often I will be talking to people or emailing people and out of nowhere I will get a message to do a reading for them. To this day, my cards and the spirit world have not missed a beat. But still, how does all of this suggest that I carry "Hawk Medicine" well, because "Hawk" told me.
Before I had a full understanding of what was going on with me, my attraction to this bird of prey was unbelievable. When I had the chicken and the hawk experience I was dumb founded to the whole concept at first. But once I accepted the fact that Hawk is part of my animal spirit clan, the more I was able to understand not only about me, but what I am suppose to do. Ted Andrews explains that the Hawk can awaken visionary powers and lead you to your life purpose.

I fully embraced the Hawk many, many years ago. In honor of the Hawk, I have a Hawk feather tattoo and when I see one it like greeting a brother or a sister and I know another message is soon to arrive.

The Red-Tail Hawk

type=textAccording to Ted Andrews, those who have a red-tailed hawk as a totem will be working with the kundalini (the base chakra). It can also reflect that this bird becomes a totem in your life only after the kundalini has been activated. It can also reflect that the childhood visions are becoming empowered and fulfilled. It may show up as totem at a point in your life when you are beginning to move towards your soul purpose.

In furthering my research I found; the Hawk is a permanent totem; it will always be with you to teach you. Hawk will teach you to sore to greater heights while keeping you grounded. It will help you to grow spiritually and teach you to live on this earth plane but expand to greater dimensions. Those who carry Hawk-Medicine need to be careful how to express their self to others who do not believe. Many times it is better to keep flying over head and remain true to who you know you are. Individuality can be a lonely road, but on the other hand, it can be very rewarding.

I have never been a social butterfly. My true friends understand that the most about me and will accept it. Loving my solitude, disappearing often and remaining true to who I am, is what I know best. I firmly believe each of us walks our path alone, because in the end, it is only you and the Divine Force. We meet many people along our trail, and every encounter is for a reason sometimes not always understood in the beginning, but the understanding will always surface.

Hi, Great article! I've had Red-Tailed Hawk Medicine since about 1992 when I was travelling cross country and felt called upon to bury at least 3 different Red-Tailed Hawks that had been killed on the highways. I am very clairaudient at this point. However, today, while out hiking, a Ferruginous Hawk faced me (it was at a distance) and hovered. It did this 3 times. A friend had just called me on my cell so I did not hear a message...I was very distracted. I came home and poured through my bird books, I had never known a hawk could hover! I believed only hummingbirds had this skill! Anyway, if you have any medicine teachings on Ferruginous Hawks it would be awesome to hear!
Also, to Manuel, years ago I rescued a crow in this same condition. It's whole family followed my car 45 minutes away to the rehabilitation center. They all talked thier appreciative talk to me on the way out as I explained to them what would happen and that once thier family member was better, it would be released. Animals (humans are animals too!) communicate through telepathy. I agree with the post that said it was the mate that appeared to you later on. When they lock eyes with you just think or better yet visualize your message to it and remain open to it's message back, that's all there is to it.

I was blown away when I saw this post because I myself have the hawk as a totem. I have never been able to find anyone else who understood the totem like me and the visions and messages that I get from it. People would always tend to look at me like I was crazy when I mentioned the hawk being my totem. It is so nice to see that there are other people out there who understand this. I also decided to fully embrace the hawk as my totem and went last June and got a hawk feather tattoo, which I treasure with all I have. I can not even begin to describe the feeling I get when I have the pleasure of seeing a hawk. It is like nothing I have ever felt in this world. They seem to follow me everywhere I go and infact I saw three this morning. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

I am just blown away right now because I have not been able to find many people like me out there so to see all of these people who also have the hawk as a totem makes me feel so much better. I have felt that everyone thought I was crazy for the visions and messages I get. I also have fully embraced my hawk totem and went last June and got a hawk feather tattoo which I treasure with all that I have. Hawks of various types have always been in my life. I have had some extraordinary experiences with them. I have also discovered to my regret that it is best to heed the messages given rather than ignore them.

Hello, I have always seen hawks most of my life. I've always felt that hawks are very special, and connected to the earth. I need some help in understanding somthing. Let me tell you guys somthing that just happend to me just a few days ago. I was driving down a residential street the other morning, and I was in a hurry. I saw this large bird on the other side of the road. And when I drove past it we locked eyes. I couldn't understand what it was doing there. So I turned around and went back. I got out of my car and found it was injured, and bleeding. It's wing was broken. After several attempts, I finally caught it. It was like nothing else matter at that moment but getting him or her help. I put the hawk in my car and drove to the ASPCA as fast as I could. I wish I had lights and sierens that morning. It was well enough to go to a rehabilitation center. Ok here is where it gets strange. later that day 5 hours went by and out of nowhere a Hawk lands on a telephone pole in my back yard, THAT SAME DAY... and just sat there. Once I made eye contact with it, it flew away. I know Hawks have somthing very special about them, but this was unlike any thing I've ever experienced in my life. Its almost like it knew. Can someone please shed some light on what happend to me.It really felt powerful. thanks

Manuel, having a Hawk Totem most of my life, I have come to the understanding that each one of us will receive the messages we need to at the time we are suppose to receive them. With that being said, I know you have gotten your answers but you are looking for confirmation. This is only my thoughts, with the hawks being messengers from the divine, I believe you were at the right place at the right time. You HELPED a hawk that needed help because it was injured, you did this without question which is a fantastic sign of you following your intuition. The Hawk on the pole I believe was the mate to the hawk you took for medical help and it was there to say Thank You. Working with Hawk medicine is accepting the messages without question. You did a wonderful thing and the Hawks will remember that. If I may just add, please take a moment and spiritually thank the hawks for the messages they have sent to you. It is very important to show honor to this kind of spiritual event. Blessings...

Manuel, you ask a great question. I love Eva's answer and I love hawks although I don't believe hawk is one of my totems. But I have had a similar experience with a hawk. Animals are very telepathic. I believe that the injured hawk "chose" you. It is so incredible when a creature of the wild looks you right in the eye and speaks to your soul. I believe the hawk had a message for you or a gift to give to you. The second hawk was there to make sure you paid attention. You may have already figured out what this gift/message is, or it may take you months. One morning you may wake up and say "I got it!"
This morning a friend shared a photo of a hummingbird that coincidentally was named my middle name. I said beautiful photo and didn't give it much more thought, until later in the day looked out my front door and there was a hummingbird looking in at me. I immediately called my friend who helps me with animal messages. The message was so perfect for me today.

Recently I have been noticing more and more hawks in nature. It has taken many hours of research to finally coming to the hawk. It seems I only see them while driving. Never seeming to get a great view of what kind or even the colors. On a single drive I can see anywhere from 1 to 10 in a 20 minute drive. Most are right off the road soaring, but sometimes I see 4-5 far off. I am confused on what this may mean. One day I had one soar right down and over my car. I know they are trying to tell me something but I can not figure out what. I always see the most of my hawks on my way to my Certified Nursing Assistance job, knowing that the hawk can mean healing/medicine, and I wonder if I am on the right path since he shows hims self so much. The thing is is that I also see them on my way to my photography job too. I absolutely dislike my C.N.A job and wish to get out of it but if I'm meant to be there what might happen? Anytime I do see them I feel a little happier and like I am where I need to be but I still feel like I am missing something. If anyone has any advice I am more than willing to listen and try. I do feel like the hawk belongs to me and me to it, I know it's not the same kind of hawk every time but that just doesn't seem to matter, I have always been a free spirited person and always searching. Does this constitute the hawk spirit? I am worried that I have not been living up to it's potential, I have red tailed hawk in my sightings and feel it's there but did I sapress it for 26 years? Please help! I need guidance! Thanks for reading!

Selston, often in life as hard as it is, we truly need to follow our heart. I understand what you are saying about seeing the Hawk a lot while you are driving, that happens with me also. Hawks are messengers from the Divine, and it is up to each of us to know what the messages are. If you ask Hawk for guidance and trust in yourself enough to "hear" the answer, it will tell you. But to be able to "trust" in yourself fully in a hard path, but also a very rewarding one. An Apache Elder once told me, "WhiteOak, you must hear beyond words and see beyond site." Other words Selston, continue to walk the path you are walking and trust in yourself and your choices, regardless WHAT anyone says. Ask your Divine Being to help you to understand because "Hawk Medicine" is a very powerful tool that is used to help others. Remember-Hawk is visionary power and guardianship.

Many years ago I read the medicine cards, and don't remember anything but that they scared me. To this day I won't pick them up, but I do believe in Native Spirituality and the medicine of visions. I was intrigued by your experiences and you have quotes by some of my favorites. I enjoyed reading this and the Winter Serenity art work is fantastic.

Thank you so much for sharing your personal experiences of Hawk Medicine! I am in my mid-twenties now and am discovering that I have had Hawk medicine my entire life. My experiences are the same as yours, I have been receiving messages for people since I can remember. However, I sort of shut it down for a while because of negative feedback from adults when I was younger. I did use my gifts to rip into people very effectively sometimes though. :) Now that I have begun to embrace my natural abilities, I have not needed to do that anymore. I have also begun to do readings with and without cards. I didn't need formal training as I usually just look at the images on the card and then communicate whatever I see or hear from Spirit. The end of 2010 was when Hawk forst came to me consciously, I have been gradually building a more conscious relationship with this powerful totem. I am humbled and excited for this journey with Hawk as I feel a profound shift taking place in my awareness.
