My Spirit Wolf Totem
There was a pretty big group. I knew most everybody but there were a few new people that I had not meant before. It was a one day workshop that would turn out to be one of the most fascinating days of my life.
Finally, I was going to meet my "Dolphin" the animal that I knew with all of my heart that was my Animal Spirit Totem. Little did I know that we are not the ones that choose our guides, our guides choose us.

Meeting My Wolf
This class started early morning and all of us brought a blanket, pillow, journal, pen, our drums and whatever else we wanted. The area where we were having the class was smudged with sage and sweetgrass so the space would be clear and free of negative energy. There were three or four main drummers (I believe) and every one of them had a very spiritual drum. I am a drum traveler (if that makes sense) I can actually be sitting in a large group and tune out every drum while focusing in on one certain drum and feel the vibrations of just that drum, then move on to the other.
You will hear different things from different people when it comes to sharing your "Journey's" with others. These ceremonies are very sacred and for all of the many years I have attended them, precipitated in them, somehow I have always trusted my "Guides" to insure me what to share and what to keep silent about. I write so much about my experiences for a few different reasons but the main reason is, in hopes of showing people that in these ceremonies you learn a lot about yourself and the spiritual aspect of life.
The whole group that was involved in the class that day, drummed for a little while so we could raise the vibrations in the room. Talk about natural highs without any substance. Unbelievable!! I wrote about the whole experience on my lens Animal Spirit Totems so I will not go into the whole thing on this lens. Because remember, I was going to meet my Dolphin!
When it was time for the class begin everyone stopped drumming except for the three or four main drummers and we all got comfortable, lay back on the floor and cleared our minds. We allowed the drums to take us into another realm, very much like "Guided Meditation" except with the full intention of meeting our "Animal Spirit Totem". We were instructed that while in this state of meditation, we were not to talk to anybody or anything.
I was walking along a huge creek (in my mind's eye) and I seen the most beautiful dolphins. They were huge, and there were three of them but they did not stop and tell me they were my Animal Totems. The ladies made a fast beat with their drums and that pulled us out of the journey/meditation state we were in. I wrote in my journal about my experience and walked outside to get some fresh air, my heart ached and I was so sad, because the dolphins I seen were not my totems. I wanted to get into my car and leave but I had paid too much money for this class so I continued.

The Timber Wolf
As the class continued, I went back into the realm I was and seen a set of large timber wolves standing on a hill. I asked them if they were my totems and they just turned their head in the direction I was suppose to walk. While you are in this meditative state, it feels like you are talking telepathically. I walked in the direction that the wolves directed and down the hill was the biggest wolf I had ever seen! It kept changing colors though, it was two tones black and white and the two colors kept changing positions. I asked, "Are you my animal totem?" it bent its head as if saying yes. The ladies beat the drums fast and we were pulled out of the journey. The class decided to take a break and eat some lunch, so I grabbed my journal and went back outside and found a secluded area by a tree and leaned back against it. I did not eat anything but had a thirst that was unbelievable. I was writing about what I experienced, and I suppose I looked dazed or zoned out because the lady holding the class came over to me and asked how I was enjoying the class. I said it was okay, I was disappointed that the dolphin was not my animal totem, and went on to tell her about the wolf. All she would do is sit there and smile! Finally she said, "WhiteOak, the yin-yang, the black and white, teaches us what?" Balance- was my reply. She got up and left me with that thought.

The Message
During our journey in to communicate more with our newly found Animal Spirit Totem I sat in front of my wolf and looked it straight in the eyes and once again asked it why kept switching colors back and forth. In my heart and with my spiritual ears I heard this: "WhiteOak, you must learn Balance in order to do the things you must do. There are many helpers around you, and now I am with you, trust and believe in the Balance you are beginning to awaken." I reached over and hugged this wolf, and it finally stopped switching colors, when it settled it was completely black on side with the white spot in the center of its head and the other side is completely white with a black spot on the other side. This picture is a collage I created to represent my Wolf.
Conclusion
Although I have always had a great respect and love for the wolf, I never thought that one would be my Animal Totem. I do seem to be drawn to a lot of people who do carry Wolf Medicine and who has a lot of Wolf knick-knacks but I do not do that. I do carry a great honor for my spirit wolf, and I have created a few different pieces of artwork. But I hold the wolf in a private sacred place, my heart!
I am going to list some of the medicine of a Wolf Totem below.
Animal Spirit Books
Wolf Medicine
According to Ted Andrews's book-"Animal Speaks" The Wolf's keynotes are: Guardianship, Ritual, Loyalty and Spirit. I also found in my research that wolf medicine also includes: Intuition, Communication and its cycle is the Full Moon and Twilight.Ted Andrews also explains the wolf has an excellent hearing sensitivity. This would be a reminder to those with this totem to listen to their own inner thoughts and words. The intuition will be strong. This idea is even further emphasized by the thick coat of fur the wolf has. Fur and hair have long been symbols of psychic abilities.
The wolf has a capacity for making quick and firm emotional attachments. Learning to trust your own insights and to secure your attachments accordingly is part of what wolf medicine teaches. The wolf will guide you as it teaches you; sometimes strongly, sometimes gently, but always with love. When wolf shows up, it is time to breathe new life into your life rituals. Find a new path, take a new journey, and take control of your life.
Native American traditions teach us that wolf is said to be "teacher" and "pathfinder". Wolf will show up in our lives when we are looking for guidance and those who do carry Wolf Medicine will move on to teach others about sacredness and spirituality.
There is a lot to learn from the wolf if we listen. One of the things the wolf will teach us is the willingness to face the "dark" within ourselves and to trust in ourselves. I have written about Our Shadow Self and this is a very important message for us to learn when we are walking a Spiritual Path. The Wolf will teach us how to develop strength and confidence in our decisions and once we do; we can learn to trust our insight and inner voice.

- Great message (and photos). I am only learning now (in my 40's) that 'you must learn Balance in order to do the things you must do.' Hard to do for work-a-holic types, but I see that leisure/vacations are just as important as work now. Thanks for sharing, Rose

- Wolf is my totem too! :) I have three white wolves with me and have been aware of them for about 10 years now. I love the theory of balance that your class teacher mentioned, Makes a lot of sense to me given my current process of working through karmic lessons, they all relate to balance! I love the timber wolf - whenever I used to visit the zoo where I used to live, I would make a beeline for the timber wolves and stand staring at them for ages! Blessed and featured on Squid Angel Pagan Blessings

- could be showing you a path that you are going down. animal spirits guiding you along that path.you are just figuring out who you are. don't be frightened about what you figure out but instead embrace it. you will have to choose what way you want to go down very soon. the other wolfs are trying to help you overcome your past and keep you moving forward. any way that's what i am getting.

- I have a few spiritual guides myself, which mostly include all lizards, wolfs, birds, and dinosaurs. I see them, most of the time. The one, that I see the most is a pure black wolf with blood-red eyes.

- Wolves are a big part of our spiritual lives. My youngest daughter started talking about "her" wolves when she was four. She said there was a pack around her that followed her and protected her. Later we had a psychic picture drawn of her and the first thing the artist said was, "you have a lot of wolves around you."
Wolves are great teachers. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. Lensrolled to my wolf lens.
