Remaining Spirit Dolls

Just as spirit dwells outside our physical box...

Spirit dolls are images that are created outside the box. I make spirit dolls completely by paying attention to the materials I am using, and the spirit guidance that is coming through to me. This is when psychic ability and creativity comes together in the best way: I like what happens when someone else is guiding my hands!

I love the excitement of never quite knowing what spirit will leap out of my hands, into the materials that I use! Take a look at how spirit dolls come to be...

The Doll as divine expression...

Spirit dolls are an ancient tradition, for dolls have expressed spirituality since prehistoric times. They reflect both human and divine qualities by resembling us in some ways, and totally ignoring human traits in others! Our ideas of angels as winged creatures began with spirit images in the Middle East thousands of years ago.

The Ghost Monk

One of my newest velvet dolls, which are now becoming part of the spirit doll family.

The Spirit Tree

The first of new spirit dolls reflecting the spirit of nature...

A Doll of Joy...

You can almost hear her humming to the music she hears. She carries shells, which symbolize psychic protection; she wears three tears of stone, showing that the sorrows she has felt helps her build a strong foundation. She is her own joy...for Stefanie, 2009

When spirit guides come in special ways...

This doll was suggested by a man who had died...

I am a psychic medium; so I am able to connect with entities who have passed on, but who want to express something in partnership with my skills. The way this doll is made was suggested by a man who had died tragically, someone who was a gifted creator himself. He has shown me wonderful ideas for paper spirit dolls, a project that I will be starting in earnest soon! This doll is one of the first test pieces I made, following his inspiration.

A closeup of the box headdress

My spirit friend has shown me designs that mostly involve intricate box within box details, lovely origami folds that are then glued together into a doll form and coated with a sealing layer of Modpodge (TM) or polycrylic sealer. I don't start with any pattern: I just start letting my hands be used.

Eventually I know that he will step away from the project, as he moves on; but right now any time I start thinking about the project I can feel him, lighting up, ready for another round of creative brainstorming!

The Fire Spirit Doll

This doll was made between many hands...

I created the face and the basic body shape, then others in a doll making circle added different things. I think the stars were a wonderful idea, and love the beading and lame' that was added!

Sadly, this doll, mailed from maker to maker, never made it back home to me. But I still appreciate seeing the work that made her so, so special, even if I never touched the finished doll...

Griselda Spirit Doll artist
Griselda has a wonderful touch for making spirit dolls! I enjoy reading her blog, and catching up with how her work is progressing. Griselda also writes well about the process of making spirit dolls.
Spirit Dolls By Paula
I love Paula's work - her spirit dolls are so sassy!
Slavic Spirit Dolls
The dolls at this website are based on Slavic spirit and fertility traditions. The dolls are beautifully simple in their forms and in their purposes; they reflect the stuff of a simple life...

Spirit Dolls on Amazon

Native American spirit dolls are the ones we are most aware of...

But spirit dolls don't need any specific culture or reason, other than we wish to make and have spirit dolls with us.

Amazon carries two books on Native American style spirit dolls.
