Spiritual Books on Sanatana Dharma

The ancient texts on Sanatana Dharma including the the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, and epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana etc. contain a wealth of information. Much of that invaluable information cannot be easily fathomed by a casual reader. Many texts contain layers of meanings and esoteric teachings hidden within in them. Many of them reveal the meaning of life; others guide you beyond life into a spiritual path; but most of them simply reveal the real truth and teach us about the way of life.

There are many books, commentaries, and documentaries which help unravel hidden mysteries and the secret wisdom. However, many miss mention or evade the discerning readers attention in a cluttered world of the current day super-fast info-highway.

It is my attempt to highlight some very noteworthy works of some eminent theologists, and some not so eminent authors and some of their works. I am a very happy reader and wish every reader among you a happy and an enlightening reading time. God bless!

A Highly Recommended Read

'The Mahabharata - An inquiry in the human condition' is a book written by Chaturvedi Badrinath - A Homi Bhaba Fellowship Award winner. The book is not about the story of the Mahabharata. It uses Mahabharata as a base to analyze the spirituality and dharma that needs to be embodied into our quest. The book analyzes the human condition in context with the Mahabharata and offers a wonderful new perspective to the thought process. A pleasurable reading for a Spiritual Soul.

Reader Review: This book by Chaturvedi Badrinath is a gem and a must read for everyone and not just the ones who are interested in Mahabharata.

Taking Mahabharata as the base, the author goes on to discuss how every situation and dilemma which exists in life can be found in this book. As is also said for the story "What is in life is in here, but what is not in here is not in life"

Other than that, the author than discusses what the scriptures have to say about every dilemma and problem one faces and this is where I really liked the book. The discussions is really practical and not some idealist stuff written in the plethora of self improvement books available in the market now a days.

The discussion on how two ethically right conducts can be in opposition to one another, how honesty may not be the best policy always are discussed at length and supported with fables and dialogues. And these are just a couple of them.

The author also quashes the western propaganda of Hinduism being all about spirituality and shows how the country has been amongst the most materialistic of them all.

Understanding the esoteric layerings of ancient texts

Any ancient text from the bygone eras mask at least seven layers of meanings within them. They are not akin to peeling layers to an onion. They are more akin to the picture in portray, approachable from the left or the right. The One true meaning or the essence is centered and is approachable diametrically by both the followers of the left-hand or the right-hand paths. As I have oft quoted "When one half is left - the other half is usually right! You need both to complete a true picture".

I am not going to delve deeply into what path that you as an individual soul may choose. But I will touch base on the ancient metaphor of the Indian cow or 'go' in Sanskrit (considered a sacred animal in India) to explain a bit.

Bhagwan Sri Krishna, fondly called as Gopala means a cowherd. Gokula translates as a cow station or a herd of kine. The cow out of sheer love for it's progenies secretes milk or gorasa (Sanskrit).

The kid needs milk for nourishment but cannot consume in excess quantities. Such consumption would lead to purging out the excess through vomiting or through loose bowel discharge. If one were to dilute a gallon of milk into tank full of water, the resultant mixture cannot be called as milk, even though the tank may contain 1% or 5% of milk in it.

Contrarily, if one were to boil the milk to a high degree, we get condensed milk. If as an individual, one may have a capacity to consume a pint of milk, one would certainly struggle to cope with digesting 1 pint of condensed milk. Condensed milk is creamy and it is a good source to whip out the best creamy butter. Likewise, when milk is curdled and diluted and churned - the cream rises to the top as butter.

Capability to consume butter varies with each individual. It requires a regular usage pattern in small doses and a strong digestive tract. Still it tends to accumulate as fat within the body - undigested and underutilized for many. Butter when put under strenuous heat turns to clarified butter or 'ghee'. Ghee is an even more harder component to digest for all - yet very aromatic and full of flavor and richness.

The ancient texts are similar in context. The more we analyze and fathom it from various ways, only few aspects can be fathomed. Bit by bit as the stories begin to unwind and unravel themselves, they start shedding the layers for all to understand. Reading a sloka or a psalm everyday without meditating upon it is akin to diluting the scripture and hoping for a miracle. Contrarily, reading the bible or the Vedas over and over again need not make it digestible or completely fathomable for the intellect.

Knowingly or unknowingly, life invariably takes us through a path of Spiritual progression. Many lifetimes would in fact be required to purge and purify, let alone digest facts. Digestion apart, digression is the work of 'Samsara' to lure you into wavering and wandering. Life is a leveler and karma points are what we can play around with. You do good and accumulate good balances; plant whatever seed that you want to reap and explore. He who takes a sword will also die by the sword.

Keep in mind the essence of the message that is being conveyed, and you straightaway are making two people happy. The conveyor of the message and yourself. Keep aside five minutes of your time each day to read a scripture and meditate upon it. It will invariably grow upon you and shed it's glorious light upon you.

God bless your today and every other day.

Aghora - At the Left Hand of God

AGHORA, At the Left Hand of God (Aghora) (v. I)

Amazon Price: $14.88 (as of 06/04/2012)Buy Now

Personal Review: Though the image of the cover and the title of the book, by itself might sound scary enough to put a potential reader away; the first of the three volumes of the Aghora series, is an excellent read. It is a real eye-opener and may come off as 'graphic' in the views of many readers; in the way the protagonist narrates his attempt to attain realization through the 'Left Handed Path'.

The book nevertheless is a jewel, as it contains pearls of wisdom, hitherto never heard of, or cannot be found elsewhere. Another highly recommended read for both seekers of wisdom through the Right Handed or the Left Handed paths.

Personal Review: The second volume of the Aghora series on Kundalini is a milestone book by the Author and the Protagonist - Aghori Vimalanda, in narrating a clear and concise study on the elusive topic of Kundalini Shakti. Many have attempted to explain the nuances and intricacies of raising the Kundalini Shakti, but none can better the work and the explanations rendered by the author and his Guru.

This book offers rare wisdom and insight and explores many topics about the spiritual realms and breaks open many myths taught by the false gurus, who seek instant gratification and fool many gullible individuals. The narrations in the book are simple and easy to read, even for a person who has never trodden in the path of Spirituality.
