"God only knows" has become an accepted way of glossing over, setting aside and sometimes dismissing things we don't want to look at more deeply.

Sometimes we resist 'knowing' more by hiding behind the 'God knows' and 'only God knows why' statements.

Sometimes we use these 'God only knows'-type statements to help comfort someone who has experienced a personal loss and is questioning things, events, personal life experiences because of their trauma and pain.

I do this too because at those times, that's all the person really needs to grasp at in order to cope with and to take the beginning steps to move through their grieving and their hurt.

But are these 'God only knows' and 'only God knows why', 'God knows' statements also a cover of fear? Do they sometimes mask deeper questions about our faith in God, our purpose in life and where we are going in our own spiritual development?
