"I'm Heading to My Laughing Place": How to Enjoy Splash Mountain

Located in Frontierland at the Magic Kingdom, Splash Mountain is my favorite Walt Disney World attraction. It's a thrilling water-log adventure with Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and Brer Bear. Splash Mountain is Disney Imagineering at its best -- excellent storytelling and thrilling adventure! Keep reading to learn more about the story, how to get the most of your trip and find special souvenirs.

The Story of Splash Mountain

Splash Mountain, the theme park attraction at Walt Disney World, is based the stories of Uncle Remus as told in the Disney movie "The Song of the South." After boarding hollowed-out logs in an old mill, we climb up Chick-a-pin Hill to begin their adventure with Brer Rabbit. Dozens of audio-animatronic characters welcome us guests and introduce the characters using cheery songs.

Brer Rabbit loves adventure so he heads out from his home in the Briar Patch in search of his Laughing Place. We are taken higher and higher on Chick-a-pin Hill, weaving indoors and outdoors, following Brer Rabbit and watching as Brer Fox and Brer plot to catch him. Is Brer Rabbit headin' for a little bit of trouble?

Now we hear banjos! Hee hee, hee hee, ho ho ho! Boy are we in luck. We are visiting Brer Rabbit's laughing place, with dancing water, singing turtles and other critters. But watch out! It looks like Brer Fox and Brer Bear has finally caught up with Brer Rabbit. Up ahead we can see a large hill and two vultures. Is it time to be turning around?

But we're in our logs with no place to go. There's Brer Rabbit tied up in a large pot as the two villians plan his demise. "Please Brer Fox, whatever you do, don't throw me in the briar patch!" our hero begs. Brer Fox takes the bait and that's exactly what happens -- and we slide down the 45-foot drop down Chick-a-pin Hill into the briar patch.

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah! Brer Rabbit has escaped, and we float back to home to a hero's welcome. A giant paddlewheeler with all of his fellow critters greets us with the famous song: "It's the truth. It's actual. Everything is satisfactual." Brer Rabbit swears he'll never leave his home again!

Back home in the mill, we exit our log. Has Brer Rabbit learned his lesson? We think not. Time for another ride...

Top Tips

Splash Mountain is one of the most popular attractions at the Magic Kingdom. To get the most out of your visit, try these tips.
  • Arrive at the Magic Kingdom early in the morning, and head immediately to Splash Mountain. Beware: Lots of other guests will have the same idea, although many will stop at Pirates of the Caribbean first.
  • Use FastPass. FastPass is like a reservation to ride the attraction at a later time. Go to the FastPass Pick-Up station right of the entrance to Splash Mountain. Insert your park admission media into the kiosk, and the machine will spit out a FastPass ticket. The ticket will have a one-hour window printed on it. You can return to Splash Mountain any time after the first time on the ticket. Go to the FastPass entrance, and show your ticket to the Cast Member. Hooray! You've avoided the Stand-By line, which will probably be much longer.
  • Ride during the evening parade or fireworks. Many, if not most, guests will be lining the streets of the Magic Kingdom, not waiting in line for an attraction. Take advantage of that! (I've been able to ride twice in a row during the fireworks. The top of Splash Mountain has a great view.)
  • Stop at the photo station at the end of the ride. That's right -- Your picture is snapped just as your log starts down the 45-foot drop! Amazingly, screaming looks a lot like smiling.

Please Don't Throw Me in the Briar Patch!

As you walk through Frontierland, it's hard to miss the sounds of the logs sliding down Splash Mountain into the briar patch. There's a kind of low-pitch click, then screams and the whoosh of jet sprays over the log, and finally the splash as the log hits the bottom. Can't you hear the sounds as you look at these photos?
