Split Rock Lighthouse State Park
The park offers campers campsites along Lake Superior where they can cart in there supplies for a relaxing get away with the family.
The park is some 2,075 acres with abundant wildlife and hiking trails and a new bike trail called the "GITCHI-GAMI (bike) TRAIL". This is part of the longest paved section of the trail that runs 13.1 miles passing through Split Rock Lighthouse State Park and ending in Beaver Bay.
The hiking trails connect with the Superior Hiking Trail. This trail parallels much of the Lake Superior coastline and passes by scenic waterfalls. Trails wind through beautiful stands of birch, spruce, fir, and ash trees. The winter landscape is also spectacular adding to the popularity of the cross-country ski trails.
Check out the DNR website for more information about this great state forest park.

The History of Split Rock Lighthouse
The structure was designed by lighthouse engineer Ralph Russell Tinkham and was completed in 1910 by the United States Lighthouse Service at a cost of $75,000, including the buildings and the land. It is built on a 130-foot (40 m) sheer cliff of mineral deposit. The lighthouse was first lit on July 31, 1910. It was built in response to the loss of ships during the famous Mataafa Storm of 1905, in which 29 ships were lost on Lake Superior.
It wasn't until 1940 when electric lighted the lighthouse. The lighthouse was also outfitted with a fog signal housed in a building next to the light tower.
The light was retired and added to the National Historic Register in 1969 by the U. S. Coast Guard.
Today the Minnesota Historical Society has selected a Minneapolis design firm to plan and supervise about $900,000 in repairs to a North Shore landmark.
"The site's history and harsh environment make this an incredibly unique project," said Philip Waugh, the design firm's historic preservationist."
