Spooky Halloween Cutouts, for the Perfect (and inexpensive) Haunted House
Hosting a Halloween Party needn't break the bank. Here are some inexpensive decorating ideas for you to try out.
While in the Northern Hemisphere Halloween falls within the beginning of autumn, in the Southern Hemisphere Halloween falls within our spring months, although with our seasons being moderate throughout the year, very often we skip spring and go straight through to a scorching summer.
Our Halloween parties were held on sultry balmy October evenings, with the seating outside on the verandah, underneath the star studded skies. Our decor was somewhat different to that which is commercially available in other countries, so we had to make our own - and we did.
Some of the activities we undertook are mentioned on this page. I do hope you have as much enjoyment in crafting your perfect Halloween atmosphere as we did.

Jack-o-lanterns
Fog machine (great idea)
Disco ball/strobe light
Put white sheets over your furniture for an eerie, haunted effect
Play some Monstrous songs.

Bella's Lullaby (Carter Buwell)
Monster Mash (Bobby "Boris" Picket)
A River Flows in Me
Werewolves of London (Warren Zevon)
Have some ghoulish and ghastly food!
Vampire fangs dipped in blood (see Tips for how-to)
Orange soda punch (Fanta or Orange Juice with Sprite mixed in)
Orange chips (Doritos, Cheetos)
A cake decorated with white icing and black icing spiderwebs
Cookies and cupcakes covered with purple or black icing
PB&J sandwiches (cut them in fun Halloween shapes with cookie-cutters)
A candy bowl filled with yummy chocolates, lollipops, gummies, etc
For fun ice-cubes, put punch in ice cube molds, put gummy worms in them, and freeze. Put these in your drinks for spooky, yummy, fun
TIPS
How to Make Vampire Fangs Dipped in Blood:
- cut up 2 apples into 15 slices
- make their tips pointy with scissors or a knife
- display them on a plate, with a bowl of strawberry jam to dip the fangs into
How to Make String Decoration:
- tape pieces of white yarn hanging down from a doorway
- wet them in a bowl of cold water (this will make a creepy, spiderweb decoration)
Warnings
Be careful not to cut yourself when making Vampire Fangs. Some people might get a little over-enthusiastic and rip the streamers and stencils off the walls/doorways. Always exercise the utmost caution when working with small, sharp or hot objects. If children assist with the creating of this monstrous masterpiece, same should be done under adequate adult supervision.

If you're a little short o'cash but NEED THE perfect haunted house...
Try these fast, tried 'n tested tips to help you create your perfect monstrosity!
Cut out your own bats, owls, scary faces, witches and monsters. You could always use coloring sheets, paint the pictures luminous colors, or black. Leave a very narrow white border around the shape when cutting out.Download some of the many freely available templates and stencils from the internet. Print onto card-stock, color and hang for decorations, or print directly onto black card or still black paper.
Use cotton balls for spooky cob webs. Make or draw your own black spiders.
Get mini pumpkins from a local grocery store.
For the always scary fake dead person, crumble up paper or use bags of leafs, shaped like a person lying down on the lawn. Put the sheet over it, squirt ketchup over it. Take a fake knife or sword and stick through your creation!
Use whatever is lying around the house and garden and get creative.
Remember that kids love to get involved in making crafts and decorations. Please always exercise extreme caution when working with small, sharp or hot objects. Children should always have adequate adult supervision! Thank you :)

The decor at the location the party is to be held is all important, whether it is to be bat-themed, witch-themed, general Halloween-themed - or for adults or children. Creating niche themes can be an exciting activity for the kids. Each corner of a room or each room in a house can be decked out in a different theme.
What You're Going to Need for Your Spooky Cutouts
Halloween templates or stencils ( witch, cat, bat, Jack-O-Lantern, bat, owl or ghost ) You can make them, borrow them or buy them!
Stiff black, orange and white paper or craft foam where noted
Scissors
Additional supplies:
needle
light colored thread
embroidery hoop
For haunting window decorations:
Print out templates. Place construction paper behind a template and cut through both at the same time. Tape figures to your windows. Note : These cut-outs look really great in small windows beside a front door. For large windows, enlarge the template on a copier and cut figure out of black poster board.
For eerie tree decorations:
Print out templates. Place stiff paper behind the template and cut through both at the same time. Thread a needle with light colored thread (tie a knot in the end of thread leaving a small amount of length to hang the cut-out), gently poke needle through the top of a cut-out, pull thread through to the knot, and hang from a tree. For a really eerie scene: You can first string small white Christmas lights, hang your spooky cut-outs throughout the tree, and finally spread spider webs (use stretchable spider webs, available from craft stores) around the tree for a great finishing touch.
For an extra spooky Halloween mobile:
Print out templates. Place stiff paper behind the template and cut through both a the same time. Tie the cut-outs to an embroidery hoop at different levels. Tie a hanging string to the top of the hoop (tie one side of thread or string to one side of the hoop and the other end to the opposite side) and find the perfect spot to hang your spooky mobile.
For a scary Halloween swag:
Print out templates. Place craft foam behind the template and cut through both a the same time. Attach the cut-outs to a handmade or store-bought fall swag. You can even string mini orange lights in the swag to light the way to your door.
For a haunted Halloween wreath:
Print out templates. Place craft foam behind the template and cut through both a the same time. Finish by attaching the cut-outs to a handmade or store-bought fall wreath.
For a chilling garland:
Print out templates. Place craft foam behind the template and cut through both a the same time. Attach the cut-outs to a fall handmade or store-bought garland (gently poke a threaded needle through the top of the cut-out, pull thread through to the knotted end, cut the thread leaving a small length to tie to the figure to the garland) and decoratively drape the garland around your door, posts, railings and porch overhang. You can even string mini orange lights in the garland to light the way to your door. Note : Another cool idea is to drape a small fall garland around a chandelier or chandelier-type kitchen light weaving it in and out, stringing the cut-outs and hanging them from the garland at different levels so they create a spooky mobile over your table.
For a Spooky Halloween Bucket:
Paint a stainless steel bucket (trick-or-treat appropriate size) orange and let dry. Print out templates and use a copier to adjust the size if necessary. Plan your design, then cut out the center of the template and tape to the front of the bucket where you want the image to be.
Paint within the template figure with black paint and let dry (add a second coat if necessary and let dry). Carefully remove the template and continue with the other template figures until your design is complete. You can paint one or more figures in the same size evenly spaced around the bucket, or you can paint on many of the figures in different sizes to create a really spooky scene. Note : This bucket can be used for trick-or-treating or it can be filled with candy to hand out to the ghosts and goblins who come to the door.
X-tra Special Idea! Print out templates, use a copier to adjust the size if necessary; cut out the center of the figures. Paint the figures onto platters, and on the outside of bowls and cups. You can even paint the figures onto glassware - jars, glasses, and bowls. Purchase special glass or pottery paint from a craft store and follow the directions for preparation, painting, and protecting your work.
