Recipes and Ideas for a Creepy Halloween Dinner
This lens contains the menu of items and recipes that we have used over the years in making our child-friendly Halloween Dinner. Also included are several bonus recipes, with link and even more ideas to help you plan your own kid-friendly Halloween Dinner.
Our Halloween Tradition - A Spooky Halloween Meal
Over the past 6 years we've developed the tradition of going over to my parents' house and making a Spooky Halloween Meal. The girls are finally getting old enough to help now with the cooking and the decorating. We usually hang up a spider web with spiders and streamers.
For food we start with some of our favorites and maybe add in something a bit different every year.
The menu here is the original one that I printed out for everyone the first year we prepared a spooky Halloween Dinner. I have included the recipes for our Halloween Meal.
Over the years my cooking techniques with the girls have evolved to emphasize two things: fast and healthy while we still have some fun.
Why a Spooky Halloween Meal Tradition?
Since I've been teaching nutrition, I don't believe I should be passing out candy. Since we don't want the house to be egged, I don't try to make a teaching point and pass out healthy Halloween treats.
It has been easier and a lot more relaxing to spend a fun evening making and eating creepy foods over at my parents.

- I haven't done anything special before, the kids were so excited when growing that dinner was something to be rushed through so they could get out the door, and kids generally came during dinner, I don't think you're ever to old to start having fun so am looking for some good Halloween recipes:-) Great lens, blessed!

Appetizers

Chopped Fingers
Bread sticks

- Serves: 6 - 8 depends on how many fingers are eaten
- Prep Time: 10 minutes
- Total Time: 30 minutes
There are several different version of Chopped fingers. Some involve bread or pizza dough and others cookies.
The version we chose was using bread sticks in a can.
Pillsbury® has come out with a simply rustic version of French Bread. This could be another way to make the chopped fingers.
Ingredients
- Refrigerated bread sticks - Pillsbury® or other brand
- Whole or Sliced Almonds
Instructions
- 1. Open can and separate breadsticks.
2. Break breadsticks into 'finger sized' pieces, usually in two.
3. Shape into finger.
4. Add Whole Almond for the fingernail.
5. Cook according to directions.

Barbed Porcupines - Hedgehog Spikes
Cheese and Pretzels

- Serves: 8 servings
- Prep Time: 2 minutes
- Total Time: 10 - 15 minutes
Barbed Porcupines or Hedgehog Spikes is a great example of how using one's imagination and coming up with fun names can encourage kids to eat healthier foods.
Hedgehog spikes are another simple appetizer that are really easy to make, so easy that the kids can help too.
This appetizer only two ingredients.
Ingredients
- 1 block of Cheese any flavor
- 1 bag Stick pretzels
Instructions
- 1. Cut cheese into cubes. This step may need to be done by an adult
2. Break stick pretzels into smaller pieces.
3. Arrange pretzels spikes around cheese cube, leaving the bottom without pretzels.
4. Place spiked cheese cubes on a tray.

Iguana Eyes and Blood Drops
Pomegranate Airls and Grapes

- Serves: 6 - 8
- Total Time: 10 minutes
Iguana Eyes and Blood Drops another simple recipe with only two ingredients.
This recipe combines grapes and pomegranates to create a healthy snack item that is filled with antioxidants, fiber and Vitamin C. If you use red grapes, you'll also get some Resveratrol.
Ingredients
- Pomegranate
- Bunch of Grapes (Green or Purple)
Instructions
- 1. Wash and slice grapes length-wise so they create little circles (Iguana eyes).
2. Prepare the Pomegranate, separating out the arils (Blood drops).*
3. Combine together and place in a bowl.

Caramel Crud with Axed Apples
Caramel Sauce with Apple Slices

- Serves: Four 1/3 cup servings
- Prep Time: 20 minutes
- Total Time: 1 hour with chilling
Caramel Crud with Axed Apples is my healthier alternative to Caramel Apples. Instead of putting the caramel on the apples, you create a dip mixed with yogurt.
By mixing the caramel dip with yogurt, you cut down on the calories (depending on the type of yogurt used) and get some additional calcium and Vitamin D, not normally found in the caramel dip.
Ingredients
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons light caramel apple dip
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract no alcohol
- 4 Green Apples
Instructions
- 1. Stir plain yogurt with light caramel apple dip.
2. Add in cinnamon and vanilla extract.
3. Chill caramel crud sauce.
4. Chop up Green Apples.
5. Serve chilled caramel dip with chopped apples.

Bonus: Frankenstein or Goblin Brains
Cauliflower and Broccoli Flowerettes
Frankenstein or Goblin brains can be either of two vegetables, both of which look a bit like brains.- For white goblin or mummy brains, use cauliflower.
For green Frankenstein or Wicked Witch if the West brains, use broccoli.
Break Cauliflower and/or Broccoli into flowerettes.
To enhance the "brain" effect of the food, steam the vegetables whole rather than chopping into pieces.
If possible, serve the broccoli on a stem, so it looks like the brain on a brainstem

- 1/2 teaspoon ground gloves
