Spool Knitting for Young and Old
One of the first crafts that I remember doing as a child was spool knitting. I would make all kinds of long strings. I think I remember making rugs for my dolls and pot holders for my mom. Wish I could remember more but my mom isn't here to help me anymore. Can't remember much more about it as that was about 50 years ago. I had forgotten all about spool knitting through the years. What brought it to mind again again was when I was trying to think of what crafts my granddaughter might like. I think she could come up with some really cool things to do with the finished strands. We had already tried beading, embroidery, and plastic canvas.
This would be a great project for mom or grandma to have quality time with either sex of children.

There Is No Reason You Can't Spool Knit
Variety Of Sizes And Nails
I Didn't Know There Were So Many
As I was doing research on what videos were available to show you how to do the spool knitting, I saw some versions that I had never seen before. I mean they went from the small normal ones with nails (which I used when I was a chld) to great big huge ones for making netting. I never realized they had taken spool knitting to such a length. I didn't realize that there were so many nail variations though. I have retrieved videos for each type of spool knitting so you can see what the differences are. I also have one on creating a necklace using the spool knitter and wire. There were some videos showing little girls learning spool knitting. One looked like she may have been as young as 5 years old. This goes to show you that spool knitting is fairly easy to do. You just have to get your rhythm.
You can use almost anything that will go through the middle of the spool. If it is thicker than the normal, you need to get a spool or something round to make one large enough. Either through video or article, I will show you various ways to make the spool knitters. I think these people have been wonderfully inventive in some of these spool knitters.

While looking at Noreen's site, I found some wonder things to do with the spool knit ropes. She embellishes shawls that she designs. She also has some incredible dolls and toys that she makes with them. She also has some projects that you could do. I really did fall in love with all the beautiful things she did with spool knitting.

- Thank you, skies. Yes, I was really astounded when I started researching spool knitting. There is so much more to it now than when I was a child with a wooden spool and nails in it.

- I still have my spools that I got when I was a kid (a really, really long time ago). They are in 3 different sizes; the biggest one has 6 pegs and the others have 4. They are plastic but they are "wood"-colored. There are 2 tools that look kinda like knitting needles, for doing the actual knitting; one is snapped off at the end but the other is complete and the end says "Remco." Anyone remember that brand? I'm thinking of making some beaded jewelry with them - only with crochet thread instead of wire. I think it would be easier to work with.

- That is cool that you still have your original spools and the little helper. I remember Remco. I would love to see some of your work done on the spool. Once you get some done, you should make a lens about it and link it to this one. Thank you for leaving this wonderful comment.

Who is Grandma Marilyn?
I Will Leave That For You To Decide
I am a grandmother who wants children to learn how to carry on our crafts. I have done crafting as long as I can remember. As a child, I worked with a homemade spool knitter and made pot holders for my mom. I taught myself to crochet while I was in Italy because I got bored. After that, I did soft doll sculpture, plastic canvas, petal people, and I don't know what else. Then I discovered beading and later bead pattern designing. So I guess you can say that where crafts are concerned, I am pretty well knowledgeable as a grandmother should be.
