Sterling Silver Spoons are Useful and Collectible

Sterling Silver Spoons and silver tableware are both useful and collectible. We can't go through a day without using one type of spoon or another. We use spoons to stir our tea or cream into our coffee or tea; wooden spoons for baking or cooking; large plastic spoons to stir what we're cooking in non-stick pans so we don't scratch the surface; small plastic spoons for parties when we want something so simple that we can throw it away; some of us collect silver spoons because they are so beautiful and keep them in spoon racks.

Spoons have many shapes and sizes, and if you haven't guessed already, we're going to explore the wonderful world of spoons, perhaps you'll see something that will be useful to you as a spoon collector or cook. Enjoy!

Collecting Sterling Silver Spoons

I have been collecting sterling silver spoons for years, and whenever I see a flea market or garage sale, silver spoons are among the things I keep an eye out for. When eBay came to be years ago, it was like the world opened up! I have purchased through eBay, but also sell "extras" I come across when purchasing a large lot of silverware at auctions.

Here are some samplings for you to look at.

Colorful Spoons for Babies and Toddlers

So Many Different Kinds and Colors

I have a very old babies silver spoon (and fork) in my collection of silver spoons, and remember using plastic coated spoons when my children were growing up, but not the variety and colorful selections you see here.

Some of these are practical, others are fun for your little one, or maybe as a gift or part of a gift for a baby shower.

The only spoon I've collected is my grandma's favorite cooking spoon. It's a large silver spoon that is completely worn down to a flat edge on one side. Great lens. It was enjoyable to learn a little history.

I dont collect spoons but have managed to end up with some pretty interesting ones in my cutlery drawer!
  • Janiece Sep 17, 2010 @ 8:23 pm | delete
Interesting page on spoons! What are the advantages of a wooden spoon over a metal one for cooking? My MIL uses a wooden spoon while cooking spaghetti sauce, but until this moment, I've never thought about why she does that.
  • The_Health_Lady Sep 17, 2010 @ 1:23 pm | delete

    so many types of spoons.

we have 5 sorts of spoons in your kitchen and dining room - serving spoons, soup spoons, dessertspoons, teaspoons, and of course wooden spoons. Oh, and I nearly forgot the metal spoons for stirring and dishing up.

When it comes to measuring, the teaspoon = 1 teaspoon, a dessertspoon = 2 teaspoons, a serving spoon = 1 tablespoon

    loads of good information here
    blessed

My favorite spoon is more of a rounded spoon, I think it might have been meant as a sugar spoon, as only one came in the set. But I find it just right for eating soup and desserts.
  • happynutritionist Sep 8, 2010 @ 6:19 pm | delete
Yes, that sounds like a sugar spoon:-) Thanks for stopping by!

Spoon was a great choice for something we can't live without. Nicely done.
  • rms Feb 21, 2010 @ 6:47 am | delete
I've got a spoon right in front of me now. I couldn't live without them! Well... I guess I could, but life would be pretty messy. :)
  • aidenw Feb 20, 2010 @ 11:03 pm | delete
I can't imagine living without a spoon. In certain countries people eat with their hands but they still need to use spoons to prepare and serve the meals. Great lens!
  • emmalarkins Feb 20, 2010 @ 9:53 pm | delete
Wow, simple and beautiful. I didn't know there was so much to learn about spoons!
