HERE'S WHAT I THINK

Sport and Politics Do Mix, Boycott the Bejing Olympics

Many people say that politics does not mix with sport. I think this is an easy get out for people, and they should look at examples where sport gave a platform for applying political pressure and making a political point.
Whether people remember Jesse Owens at the 1936 olympics, or the black power salutes at the '68 olympics, they will have to admit these were very powerful images tieing sport and politics.
In 1980 the USofA boycotted the Moscow Olympics due to the host countries agressive occupation of Afghanistan. in 2008 the Olympics are being held in China, a country with appalling human rights abuses and is occupying forcibly a number of other countries such as Tibet and Darfur.
Olympic athletes are being asked to sign a contract that they will not partake in any political action whilst in the host country. Today we are more concerned with profits from China than protesting about their actions, to such an extent that we are gagging our athletes!

Yes, you're right!

CindyJaneStone says:

I vote boycott. I have many reasons for this opinion, but he biggest one of all is the Chinese government is supporting the "illegal government" of Zimbabwe and all the inhumane stuff he is doing over there. Why anyone in the world would support what's going on in Zimbabwe is just beyond me...

sportsman says:

They there is no such thing as bad publicity it has brought this subject right into peoples living rooms via television news.

The_Book_Garden says:

Well!
Tibet can't really be compared to Texas, A fairer comparison would be the US annexing Mexico and repressing the local population whilst stripping out all the natural resources!
As for 'All' of China's problems? Well I haven't mentioned the pollution or Taiwan, I was merely concentrating on the history of Human Rights the country has and the ease with which they discard these when convenient. That's right, HUMAN RIGHTS! Although I do have sympathy for animal rights the way China treats it's own citizens and those in territory's such as Tibet is the focus of the worlds attention in the run up to the 2008 Olympics.

Oran-Kangas says:

The Chinese government (not the people) is barbaric. By official edict, they are even now hauling away every cat the butchers can find and placing them in death camps, where they have no food or water. The cats' only choice -- to die painfully. Their only offense -- to be born in a country lead by senile mass murderers.

Don't like cats, monkey-brain, well last year they did the same to dogs.

Don't like cats OR dogs, then head for China. You'll fit right in.

stevecrenshaw says:

You may be right. I do not usually get caught up in things like boycotts but we need to put our feet down somewhere. I listened to a Bob Costas interview this morning and there may be blood in the streets during the Olympics i.e. Tiena min Square. The people who want change will have the largest stage in the world to pick a fight with the communist government.

Squidster says:

I go even further and say that the Olympics are a dinosaur that just doesn't fit in with our times anymore. What goes on in Beijing is the best example, in my opinion.

Mr Justice says:

Absolutely yes - boycott! This action by China is horrendous.

Ana Logue says:

Let's see...censorship, population control, land grab of Burma, attempted destruction & criminalisation of Tibetan culture, Darfur occupation, human rights abuses, people trafficking, political prisoners, animal abuses, child labour, pollution & eco terrorism, mass population displacement due to the impending and in my view immoral Beijing Olympics.

But if you want to start pointing fingers about human rights records etc then be very careful who you point to and why, Americans especially. Just look at what your Government has been up to!

Erik Allas says:

We have centuries of experience with human rights violations. And still we're just talking about it... Like the song goes: A little less conversation, a little more action .. please !

ChrisGray says:

China should never have even got a sniff of the Olympics!! There must have been a mother of a backhander!

Mobiiart says:

China's treatment of Tibet should get them banned from the Olympics!

CheekyChimp says:

Since this country thinks Chimp brains are delicacies I think that the country should be boycotted all together. Many stories about tables with a hole in the center where the top of a live Chimp gets his or her head cut open while still alive and the diners DIG IN. They also consider Cat a delicacy and boil them alive to get the fur off easily. An HBO documentary on vegetarianism shows it all in Technicolor.
And the inhumane rights in China.....fuhgedabowtit!
Give more money to the people who brought you poison pet food,
poison kids toys, poison toothpaste and who knows what horrors are ahead. keep supporting these Chimp eaters and see who's brains they are sucking on next. I would probably leave the kids at home if i were going.

No way, Monkeybrain!

BEN says:

How do you know human rights abuses definition?what mean human rights?
Why Chinese people not claim with the more rights, but another
foreign persons need to worry replace us? All most Chinese in
others countries, they hope come back to the self country, that is
very clear illustrate what mean!
Of course, if you want boycott the China Olympics, also you can
boycott china produces~ you think this is for press to the china
goverment? boshit~ it's just give more stress to the Chinese
residents! I hope you can think about is deeply and deeply~

bconnor11 says:

You're right, they can mix. But we shouldn't boycott the Olympics. The Olympics are an international tradition, and I don't think this is the way to go about pressuring China.

Shuttermeshort says:

no... they don't mix. The olympics are about getting together to fairly compete. nothing about politics. I dont agree with what china is doing AT ALL but that has nothing to do with the olympics. Just gives us more reason to go kick ass!

famousmortimer says:

I don't agree that the athletes should be signing contracts saying they won't protest, that is a bit heavy handed. But, I do think that the decision to go over there and compete in the olympics should be up to the individual, and there shouldn't be a country wide "boycott" on going. If a certain swimmer doesn't want to go to show solidarity with the cause of Tibet, more power to them. But likewise, if someone who has spent their life training for this event wants to go and win and doesn't want to get caught up in the politics of it all I think that is their right. I would hate for the politicos of this country to take that right away from them. America is about individual choice, or atleast it should be.

Also, I just wanted to let you know that I featured this lens on my blog (which is about HMB at large). Check it out at famousmortimer.wordpress.com

Rakionplayer000 says:

I admit China isn't the greatest country, but what you don't understand is Tibet is now part of China. If, let's say, Texas wanted to become independent and started violent riots, I dare say the USA would do the say - using force to crush the rioters.

Secondly, I notice that people have started to drag up ALL of China's problems. Let's see, started with Tibet, then Darfur(God knows how this is related at ALL), then all the way to unsafe toys, hyperinflation of currency for the world, drug trafficking etc. Tell me, what the heck does this have to do with anything?

Hope that this isn't because you guys are rascists?
