Sporting Dogs

Naturally active and alert, Sporting dogs make likeable, well-rounded companions. Members of the Group include pointers, retrievers, setters and spaniels. Remarkable for their instincts in water and woods, many of these breeds actively continue to participate in hunting and other field activities. Potential owners of Sporting dogs need to realize that most require regular, invigorating exercise.

Labrador Retriever

These dogs are loyal and good with little children. With training, the Labrador is one of the most dependable, obedient and multi-talented breeds in the world. Labradors are generally considered good companions for people of all ages ,including a high level of patience and tolerance for children, making them both excellent companions.Their best feature is their temperament. Labs are loving, people oriented dogs. They are happiest when they are with you. Labs are retrievers and will bring you things they find laying about your house or yard. They tend to be quite patient with children and wonderful family dogs. They are not guard dogs. They may bark protectively, but will generally not act more aggressively. Labs are wonderful people dogs, more likely to lick someone to death than hurt them. They tend to be stable, not easily upset by strange things or occurrences. They will take many things in stride.
Labradors also require plenty of exercise -- this is especially true since most Labs love to eat! Ensuring they get proper exercise, training, and attention will give you a happy, healthy Labrador.

Some Lab Puppies

Golden Retriever

The temperament of the Golden Retriever is a hallmark of the breed and is described in the standard as "kindly, friendly and confident".
The typical Golden Retriever is calm, naturally intelligent and biddable, with an exceptional eagerness to please.
As the name suggests, the Golden Retriever loves to retrieve. Whether the object is a thrown stick, tennis ball, or flying disc, retrieving can keep a dog of this breed occupied and entertained for hours, particularly if water is also involved.
Golden Retrievers are compatible with children and adults and are good with other dogs, cats and most livestock. Golden Retrievers are particularly valued for their high level of sociability towards people, calmness, and willingness to learn. Because of this, they are commonly used as guide dogs, mobility assistance dogs, and search and rescue dogs. They are friendly and tend to learn tricks easily. The Golden Retriever is very devoted to family, and eager to please. The Golden Retriever is simply loving and loveable!

Golden Retrievers

Fast Fact

Golden Retrievers are among the most popular breeds in America and are familiar faces from numerous media spots, including the movie Air Bud and the TV Show Full House.

Cocker Spaniel

The Cocker could not have become the top dog in the US unless it had a good temperament.A well-bred Cocker is sweet, loyal, cheerful, playful, trustworthy, easily trained, adaptable, all those things most sought after in a family pet.The Cocker Spaniel has a delightful personality with a mischievous side that reflects a mind of its own. Typically described as jolly, sweet, smart, sociable and eager to please, the Cocker has a spirited curiosity and makes an ideal companion. These dog get along fantastically with strangers, dogs, children and other pets; aggression or timidity is extremely rare. Cocker Spaniels are rather sensitive, so owners need to be gentle and show patience with these dogs.
It's a very happy breed. You'll often hear Cockers referred to as "merry". They just seem to be enjoying themselves most of the time. All you have to do is watch that tail wag, and you can tell when a Cocker is happy... which is most of the time. Most Cockers are playful and fun to be around. They'll often make you laugh. A playful, happy, merry tail-wagger. that's the Cocker Spaniel.

Weimaraner

Weimaraners are fast and powerful dogs, but are also suitable home animals given appropriate training & exercise. These dogs are not as sociable towards strangers as other hunting dogs such as Labradors and Golden Retrievers. Weimaraners are very protective of their family and can be very territorial. They are also highly intelligent, sensitive and problem-solving animals, which earned them an epithet "dog with a human brain".
An active owner is more likely to provide the vigorous exercising, games, or running that this breed absolutely requires.
The Weimaraner Standard describes the breed temperament as friendly, fearless, alert, and obedient, but this is but the half of its personality. Assertive, bold, loyal, and headstrong also fit, giving the dog a loving attitude with a willingness to take the upper paw in the family if the opportunity presents itself. Housebreaking can be a problem, as can destructive chewing.

Vizsla

Vizslas are very high energy, gentle-mannered, loyal, caring, and highly affectionate. They quickly form close bonds with their owners, including children. Often they are referred to as "velcro" dogs because of their loyalty and affection. They are quiet dogs, only barking if necessary or provoked.
The Vizsla thrives on attention, exercise, and interaction. It is highly intelligent, and enjoys being challenged and stimulated, both mentally and physically. Vizslas that do not get enough attention and exercise can easily become destructive or hyperactive. Under-stimulated Vizslas may also become depressed or engage in obsessive-compulsive behaviours such as persistent licking. Vizslas are very gentle dogs that are great around children. The Vizsla wants to be close to its owner as much of the time as possible. Many Vizslas will sleep in bed with their owners if allowed, burrowing under the covers.
They get along well with children and in most cases other dogs. They will tolerate cats they are raised with. The Vizsla loves to chew on anything and everything and is not a calm and placid breed. They will become destructive if they are allowed to be bored.

Irish Setter

This Beautiful breed gets along well with children, other dogs, and any household pets, and will enthusiastically greet visitors.
Irish Setters are an active breed, and require long, daily walks and off-lead running in wide, open spaces. They are, however, a breed with a tendency to 'play deaf,' so careful training on mastering the recall should be undertaken before allowing them off-lead.
It is faster and has more endurance than other setter breeds. In general, Irish Setters are friendly, enjoy human company, and actively look for other dogs with which to play. They are excellent with children. Due to the breed's need for frequent activity, this is an inappropriate dog for inactive families or apartment dwellers
Many observers find Irish Setters to be among the most beautiful of all dog breeds. Their dark red color, profuse feathering, and happy-go-lucky nature make them quite attractive to many dog lovers. However, Irish Setters are not the breed for everyone! They are very energetic dogs who require plenty of exercise, attention and affection.

They are also sociable, friendly, and sensitive. An intensely devoted companion, the Gordon Setter is a wonderful family dog.

Sporting Dogs

The sporting group comprises some of the most popular breeds, including pointers, setters, retrievers and spaniels. Both routinely in the top five breeds, the Labrador retriever and the golden retriever together account for nearly one-quarter of the more than 1 million dogs registered with the AKC every year.

Alert, active and intelligent, sporting dogs have historically been used by hunters to locate, flush or retrieve game from land or water. Many sporting dogs are still used as hunting companions today, although their gentle natures and high level of trainability have also earned them the reputation of being among the best family dogs. These same traits often lead to some of these animals being recruited into service positions, either as helper dogs for the disabled or as bomb and drug sniffers for law enforcement agencies.

Unfortunately, the sheer popularity of some of the sporting breeds, most notably cocker spaniels but also Labrador and golden retrievers, has led to a rise in health and behavioral problems. Some indiscriminate breeders have inflamed congenital problems by careless overbreeding, and have created unstable temperaments through simple neglect. Be especially careful in finding a reputable breeder of these dogs.
