What sports gear do I need to get fit?

I've heard this said so many times: I've let myself go and I want to get fit again but I don't have the sporting equipment to do it. To tell the truth, you don't need specialised sports gear to get fit and healthy. All you need is the determination to do it!

Sure, you can go into a sports store and buy them out of their equipment and break your legs trying to carry it all home, but why bother when you can do simple "starter" exercises at home with no equipment whatsoever? For instance, stomach crunches can be done with just your feet stuck under the sofa, or with your partner holding them to the ground. Walking to work / to fetch your children from school every morning will start you off on the right... erm... foot, and doesn't need any special shoes or equipment. Even doing the household chores can be turned into light exercise, such as vacuuming. If you lunge down onto your haunches with ever vacuum push, you'll tone up your legs and get a cardiovascular work out in no time!

Invest wisely

Of course, when you start to step up a gear (for instance when the morning walk is pleasant instead of a struggle to put one foot in front of the other), you will need to invest in some specialised equipment, which has been developed mainly for the reasons of safety and convenience. For instance, many sports shops stock proper clothing for specialised exercises such as yoga or pilates. Additionally, if you want to join in with others in a sport, you may need your own equipment, such as bats or balls to begin with. Sports gear needn't be expensive, but should be guaranteed to last you a long time.
