I had a bit of discussion with my stepson the other day about real sports and video game sports. He preferred video game sports, well I preferred the real sport - getting out there and trying to win, or to better myself with practice. I have played baseball, soccer, rugby, golf, tennis, worked with weights and nautilus, etc. I rode bicycle several miles on weekends before it was considered a sport, I ride it now for exercise. I suffered badly with shin splints before they had good sneakers for joggers. I was one of the fastest on my school track, but it hurt after awhile to jog. My father and sister also suffered badly from shin splints, and we all quit jogging. I now ride bicycle and play tennis for variation in my exercise. I was also involved in boxing and martial arts.

So, buying gifts for me was quite easy, most of my life. Now it is basically riding my bicycle and playing tennis, though I am considering speed walking, but I want to get better sneakers, because of the shin splints from jogging.

Sometimes, in the winter, the climate can make it next to impossible to exercise outdoors, and I have to stay inside and use weights and a stationary bicycle, which makes it difficult to keep my exercise routine anywhere near the 45 minutes to an hour I like to exercise. I would rather brave the elements, than stay inside and exercise, but that is niether here or there.

Buying sports equipment for the novice is easy, buying something for the intermediate and more advanced sports minded person can be difficult. I would suggest that you take the friend of the person whom you are buying the gift for with you. There are so many different materials that sports equipment is made of, that you will require someone who can speak the jargon. Even though I have rode a bicycle for several years, I will take my brother with me when I look for bicycles, because he understands the more technical parts of bicycles, ie the frame, the gears and gearing, wheels etc.

When I buy golf equipment, I will take my nephew with me, as his knowledge of golf equipment is far superior to me. He always starts off by taking me to the juniors section, because my golfing is so bad, to look at clubs.

I would take a friend who knows the sport to look at equipment, unless you are an intermediate or advanced player yourself. This will minimize returns, and make Christmas more successful!
