Located in central Italy, Assisi is an Umbrian town that is best known for its main attraction, the Basilica di San Francesco. Assisi is also known for the Basilica di Santa Chiara, amongst other churches, as well as its Roman ruins, fortresses and narrow cobblestone streets and laneways.
I have traveled to Assisi twice and can honestly say that it has much to offer travelers of all budgets. Its hilltop location combined with its numerous attractions makes it a popular tourist and pilgrimage destination.
Linger and enjoy your stay!

Assisi: Hilltop Umbrian Town
Assisi, Umbria, Italy
Quaint, relaxing, refreshing - all sketch a picture of Assisi, Italy, but its abundance of natural beauty completes the picture of this Umbrian town located on Monte Subasio. Accessible by either bus or train, which drop you off in Assisi's modern section, you are still one short bus ride shy of Assisi's historic center. The drive to your destination is a meandering climb, taking you up and away, which is why so many visitors to Italy include Assisi in their itinerary. Many artists and photographers are drawn to Assisi and the earthquakes of '97 have done little to shatter one of Italy's most picturesque towns.{Photo taken at dusk - view Assisi's historic center.

Panoramic Views in Assisi
Picturesque Assisi
To experience Assisi is to behold the grandeur of the natural world. Take a short trek in any direction and take in the valleys, the mountains, and the tranquility. Venture onto the footpath east of the "centro storico" (historic center) and explore Rocca Minore, an abandoned fortress. From the historic center climb north to Rocca Maggiore, which is maintained and where refreshments are available. Don't forget your camera! Stroll southeast and this time look up at Assisi from amongst the olive groves. Assisi's pristine beauty awaits the camera's lens; however, you won't soon forget all those pictures you didn't shoot.{View of Assisi looking up towards its historic center with olive trees in the background. Assisi - In the Historic Center
Assisi's Old Town
Assisi is famous for its hand-embroidered goods - now is the time to shop for embroidered blouses, scarves, and tee shirts, amongst other items - and they won't add a lot of extra weight to your luggage.
Reasonably priced lodging can be found even in the heart of Assisi and restaurants abound for all budgets; however, reservations are the rule during the summer and religious holidays.
